People's Symphony In First Orchestral | Concert of Season| BY SYLVESTER RAWLING. RANZ X, ARENS, entering w F the stage of Carnegie Hail y terday afternoon to direct | first concert of the Fexson by the Poos | ple's save failed to recognize the note of af- fection in the greeting of the large ou- fience. At once he plunged into one of the filuminative gistertations that is eXpected of him, th ubject this time Deing Massenet, whose “Phedre" over ture and leditation’ intermezeo from “Thais” were on the programme. Inet. dentally he paid tribute to Oscar Ham- merstein and to Mary Garden for their efforts to make popular in New York the works of the distinguished French composer, Schubert's beautiful “Un- finished” symphony gave him another opportunity for an instructive talk. ‘The rest of Programme consisted ter played in memory of Alfred 4 Elgar's march, “Pomp ce," was the soloist in the American concerto. Her playing was much applauded, but she missed so! thing of the sentiment of the graceful composition. Maximilian Pilzer, who is deservedly popular, played the violin Part in Massenet's “Moditation.” The orchestra did credit to Mr. Arens’s training. It was especially good in El- gare “Pomp and Circumstance." What fine material for a national anthem there is in that work. Just compare it with “Tripoll,” Italy's new war song. » GARDEN POPULAR CONCERT ATTRACTS MORE THAN 5,000. There were more than 6,000 persons in Madison Square Garden last night, the box office reported, at a popular priced concert arranged by Julius Hopp, as he sald, “primarily for the purpose of spreading the appreciation of music among the working people.” Perhaps the announcement that Meyer London, @ Socialist candidate for Congress, would ®peak in the intermission on “Art and the Peupie’ counted for sometiing. At any rate the whole audience stayed un- ti! the end and never a more intent and appreciative one could be looked for in Carnegie Hall. Mr. London alone suf- fered. When he began to speak there Was a rush from the sides to get near the platform, and by the time the at- tendants had pushed the invaders back Mr. London had finished. Few people heard him, It was all over tn five min-| utes. Modest Altschvler and the Russian Symphony Orchestra furnished, the mu- ale, which began with Wagner's “Tann- hauser’ overture and ended with Tschai-| kowsky's "1912" overture. Lizst, Rubins stein, Saint-Saens, Rimsky-Korsakoft and Ponchiell! were among the com: posers represented. One of the num- bers best received was the Volga barge- men's song, by Glazunow, although Mr. Altschuler robbed it of much of the pathos with which M. Andrieff was wont to endow tt. More than once dur- ing the evening the playing of the first violinist was deservedly recognized. The soloist. was Mme, Gracia Ricardo, z arias from “Aida” nd was encored. DAVID SAPIRSTEIN SHOWS HIS SKILL AS A PIANIST. David Sapirstein, pianist, heard here in his youth, made a New York reap- pearance in a recital at the Republic At once ‘Theatre yesterday afternoon. he disclosed himself as a matu In manner unpretentious, he w masterful and charming. ‘There opportunities to discuss him at greate length. His programme yesterday con- sisted of Brahams's “Variations and Fugue on a Theme by Handel" op. 24; Ya “Grosse Sonate,” op. 106; by Chopin, and s of Don Juan.” Mr. Sapirstein distinguished himself by resolutely declining to add extra num- bers to his programme, although the de- mand upon him waa insistent. He re- peated one of the preludes, but that was @i, Would that other artists had a Ike courage! MISCHA ELMAN RETURNS TO RENEW HIS TRIUMPHS. Mischa Elman triumphed again at Camegie Hall on Saturday afternoon when he gave his first violin recital of the season before a crowded house that showered applause upon him. His taste fhes continued to ripen with his skill un- Ml now he commands respect equally meh admiration. His programme in- Beethoven's Sonate in F. major, Gencerto in F sharp minor and 's sonata in D major. Many num- bers were added to the eight an- nounced and at the end there was a Yemonatration in front of the platform. Percy Kahn's accompaniments were ad- mirabie, Pe are STEAM ROUTS WORKERS.
