t _on the, the 20th day of July, personally | GIRLS SPENT $17,235 FOR VACATIONS: HAVE |S $24,989 ON DEPOSIT Fund Started a Year Ago With 34 Saving; 5,509 Now Are Interested. More than 60 girls attended the first fall meeting of the depositors In the Working Girls’ Vacation Savings Fund at Terrace Garden last night. Speeches were made by 3 Gertrude Robinson Smith, chairman of the committee which has the fund in charge; Mrs. August Beimont, Mrs. Josephine Daskam Bacon and Mrs. Francis Bacon. In her report Miss Smith said that the fund, which started with thirty- four girle last November, now had 5,609 depositors, whose deposits to- talled $24,689. Of this amount 2,796 girls had withdrawn for vacation money $17,235. During the summer Months, when deposits were at their in no one week was there handed ig less than $400, though withdrawals @ometimes amounted to nearly $1,400 @ week. It is estimated that nearly tem thousand persons took advatage of the ist of 427 accredited boarding houses investigated by the committee last spring. “The Amerioan girl," said Miss Smith, “te more used to receiving compliments than oriticism, yet it has often bee: wal of her that she !s less thrifty and far sighted than her sister across the wea, One criticism that I desire to make ie that she does not always piay the game fairly. She ts not always frank and lacks a sense of responst- Dility. For this reason people are afraid she won't etiok to what she has agreed to, “Bome of the girls in the Fund de- ferve this criticism. I have learned thet many of you failed to use your identification cards when you went to the recommended places last summer because of @ false pride. You felt that you were ‘tagged,’ as it were, and didn't want to admit that you had saved your money in @ working girls’ fund.” a MARRIES MRS. WILLIAMSON. Henry M.
