SCHOOLS ARE OPEN AGAIN PARTTIME FOR 000 PUPLS 730,000 Youngsters Go Back to the Winter’s Search for Knowledge. ‘When 78,00 youngsters trudged to echool this morning about 8,000 of them found they could be accommodated only art time by the city. There are 20,000 @ore pupils in the public schools than last yoar. City Supt. William H. Maxwell says there are seats for 750,000 children, but the diMcylty is to distribute the young- eters among the classrooms, Owing to the constant shifting of population a @ohool may be overcrowded one year and partly vacant the next year. The Citizens’ League of the Bronx has eked Borough President Miller to Jet the Board of Education use two @rmories temporerily for school pur- poses. Practically none of the new schools were ready for occupancy to-day, though they will come into use one by one within the next few weeks, Fif- teen new buildings and as many addi- tions to existing schoolhouses were provided for in the budget for 1912, The Washington Irving High School, @t Bixteenth street and Irving place, with accommodations for 4,000 girls, may @ot be ready before the middie of October. It will be the biggest school ef the kind in the world. It has forty elassrooms, not including study halls, music rooms, kitchen, laboratories, lec- ture halls and rooms for teaching mill- Unery, domestic science, &c, There will de a staff of 150 teachers. The new elementary school, No, 61, at Twelfth street and Avenue B, ts not Ukely to be ready before next February, Of the two new schools in the Bronx No. 47 will be finished by the middie ot this month and No. 4 will come into eervice in November. In Brooklyn part of the new Boys’ High School will be in use this week, Dut it will be several months before the whole building is finished. Two new chools in Brooklyn, No. 168 No. 171, are ready. The new Bush- wick High School will be opened next February. The Bay Ridge High School fe not much past the foundation work, In Queens schools Nos, 40 and 92 are Bnfinished. This fall and winter there will be four evening schools for teaching Eng- Met to foreigners. Last year there were two. Otherwise the evening elementary echools will be about the same as last year.
