At first he thought Ne was one of the Workinen employed on the finishing touches to the prison, but the con tractor assured him that the man was A stranger to him and the copper went after the wanderer Hammerle saw him coming, and at the corner of Washington and Newark “atreets broke a run. Mammerle cleared the fence at a bound and sped across the tracks. The poltce- man was close on hig heels and the mob was a good second to the police- man, Under a car went the fugitive anda yell went up from the crowd, for ® train from Newark was pulling tn on the other side. Under the car fol- lowed Guthell and saw Hammerto sprint Across the track in front of the train, @ latter missing him by a foot Hammerle ran into the freight yard and mingied with the men. Cuthell atill coming. He recognized his man and collared him. Back to prison went Hammerle and an adtitional charge of Jatt breaking was lodged against him.
