When Cupid’s Arrow Pierces You How Do You Know You Are Hit? One of the Symptons of Love ‘‘Is Indifference to the High Cost of Liv-| ing,’ Declares Mrs. Edith Ellis Furness, Well Known Dramatist. Marguerite Mooers Marshall. Mow do you know when you are ia love? Surely the 1 Many w fi youth, have told us that love | disease. Even a few of the pocts agreed to this diagnosis, I reme! one Scotchman who ruefully exciatma: “Oh, luve, luve, lave! Luve Is lke a dizzin It winna let a puir body Gang about his business!" And yet, #0 far, no scientist has suc- ceeded in Isolating the love-germ. There le Laboratory where one may ¢ or be Inoculated with an ‘The medical profession has shamefully ne: d love disorders, confining ftself he automatic pre-/ scription of “liver pills.” And the sure tests Indicating the pres- ence of the tender passion remain un+ discovered, Let us see what we can do. I shall be very glad to receive letters trom Evening World readers, giving their answers to this question, “How do You know when you are in love?” FOUR RULES FOR GUIDANCE SUGGESTED BY A PASTOR. Tn the meantime here are the four rules of guidance suggested by the Rev, W. B. Norton, of the Woodlawn Park Methodist Church In Chicago: First—You care not for wealth, position, things material. You worship only the person. Gecond—You are intensely inter- ested in tiny things concern ing the beloved. ‘Third—You fina joy in service, mo matter how arduous. Fourth—You feel pain at sepa- ration. But even if you be affiicted with none of these symp! you may be a lover, according to Mrs. } Ellis Furness, the well-known dramatist. Mr Far- ness has her own list of love-tests and here {t 1s “First—Indifference to the high cost of living, Second—Total incredulity in re- gard to the ideas of marriage held by your family and friends. ‘Third—A mania of optimism, unimpared by « throb of peseim- fem. Fourth—A belief that ‘he’ is the one perfect being in an imperfect world, Fiftth—A sense of discovery.” “Then, too, love 1s different from measles and whooping cough and scar- let fever,” Mrs, Furness added, ‘“be- cause each case is a study in Itself. There are always individual symptoms which defy generalization. Even the members of the same famtly—brother and sister who have grown up to- gether—are not likely to ‘take’ love in the same way. LOVE LAUGHS AT THE PRICE OF BEEFSTEAKS. “If young people quite realized the cost of beefsteak, during their court- ehip, I'm afratd there would be fewer marriages, But we needn't worry. An| appointed official of the Board of Trade might intone market reports for the most practical young woman night and morning, yet love would stuff her ears with cotton. Unless her disturbed fam- fly arose to prevent the marriage, it would surely take place just the same. “And why should the family inter fere? It has been proved that the best and healthiest children are produced by the law of natural selection, not by the ‘arranged’ marriage, ‘That s ono reason why the French stock 1s deteriorating. It {s also the reason, though she doesn't realize it, why a girl in love pays little attention to all her father and mother and married relatives have to say about marriage. She is convinced that they all have the most perverted {leas on the subject, and that their lives have deen failures, compared with the giow- ing success she has planned for herself. “For the girl in love 1s the one com- plete optimist, unless the circumsta eutrounding her love affair are very happy indeed. Even then she sees more silver linings to her clouds than she could possibly find if love didn't help her to look for them. She {8 so sure that this love 4s the strongest and most powerful force in the world that {t will by {ts own impetus down diMculties and carry all before it, Then she is so sure of the man, the lovee, as we ought to call him. “Phe ancients right when they bandaged the eyes of their love-god. It is perfectly true that when one is in love one's sense of perspective is fatally blurred. Ev- erything about the lovee is raised to herolo proportions, and every- thing about him is right, ‘Even his failings lean to virtue'’s side; in fact, they lean so far that they're well over the line, And it doesn't make one particle of difference whether or not the man really is = food sort, Except that x think the bad men are worshipped even Gore tutensely than the good. “But perhaps {t only seems that way | to outsiders who see the enormous dis- crepancy between what these men get and what they give. LATE 'TEENS THE DANGEROUS AGE FOR THE MALADY. “What is the ‘dangerous age’ for the disease?" T inquired. “Most of us catch it In the late ‘teens or early twenties,” Mrs. Purness re- piled. “AN things considered, that is perhaps the best time. Those who wait and expect to escape altogether usually have a particularly severe attack when they think they are old enough to know better. Of course, some may have It more than once. Some are more versatile than others. “Incidentally, it doesn't make @ bit of difference whether the lover has ex- pressed his affection. A certain jJudi- clous Indifference on the part of a young man Is an exceedingly wise move, ‘The mingled curtosity and hope which he inspires may easily be the beginning f course, an exceedingly silly social custom which prevents a girl from showing affection when she feels it, without walting for the man. A girl Is suppored to dissemble endlessly, 4 then, all in a moment, confess that she ‘loves him true.’ Personally, if I were a man, I should hesitate about marrying a per- son capable of such finished deceit.
