HELD MAIMED *FORTHREE HOURS '—BEREED TO DEE a acy Fireman Shaler, Crushed Un- der Tug’s Flywheel, Nearly Drowned in Pool of Oil. SURGEON HELD UP-HEAD Men Tumed Faint at His Plight, but Finally Unnamed Machinist Freed Him. After being pinned for three hours ‘under the flywheel of his tugboat and half drowned in ofl, Edward Shaler, fireman on the F. J. Benner of the Boe Line Towing Company, is thought to be éying at the Long Island College Hos- pital, Ghater's experience was frightful. As the boat was docking at $ o'clock yes- terday afternoon at pler No, 38, Hai ton street, Brooklyn, the ten deckhan heard @ ecream from the engine roo! At the same moment the engines grt and then stopped, the engine, his left leg wedged between the flywheel and the floor. The floor was thick with dripping oll and the head of the pinioned engineer was deep tm it. Unable to bear the sight, the men sorambled to the deck, one almost fainting. A policeman called an ambulance from the Long Island College Hospital. Dr. responded. He and his driver, Joseph Maloney, are used to horrifying sights. They went to the engine room, to find Shaler almost drowned in the pool of oil. The driver lifted the pin- joned man’s head and held it free of the oll. “For God's sake give mee knife! Let me cut my own throat!” The doctor gave more morphine, but the drug had little effect. For three hours the driver held Sha- ler’s head out of the ofl pool, and for three hours #the doctor administered morphine at frequent intervals. A few minutes after 6 o'clock @ big man came down the narrow stairs. Shaler was growing weaker, but was still conscious, still begging that some one kill him. The vig man, a machinist, who said it didn't matter who he was, began work. He took off several wheels before he could get to the fly wheel. At 6.20, three hours and twenty minutes after Shaler had veen caught, the wheel was lifted of his leg. Dr. Parness had formed a tourniquet about the limb just below the hip and this had stopped the flow of blood. Shaler is twenty-one years old end lives at No. 15 First street, Bayonne, N. J. He is a strapping, athletic chap and was considered careful. Investiga- tion into the cause of tke accident showed that a platform above the ma- chinery, on which the fireman was standing, gave way under him and he fell under the wheel.
