The bomb had been placed against the rear door of Salvatore Mat- tellone's pastry shop on the north sie of the building. The usual fusilade of revolver shots was fired, and women and children swarmed down the stairways, the front and fire- escapes, while others fled to the roof. Policeman Gram, at the intersection of Houston street, less than sixty feet away, saw no suspicious persons enter ing or leaving the tenement house be- fore the explosion. It 1s the fourth explosion since the arrest of Guiseppe Costabile, alleged chief of the bomb makers, on Sept. 6, and Glovanni Rizzo ten days later, Both of them were caught with bombs in their possession.
