Gohn Kenton, who has been Acting @hiet of the Fire Department since the Getirement of Edward Croker, was ap- Beinted Chief by Commissioner John- fom to-day. There was a big attendance of city oMcials and citizens who are ac- ively Interested in the Fire Department. Besides Chief Kenlon, thirty-two other firemen were promoted. At the same time seventy-five new men were ad- mitted to the department. The 103 who ‘were on hand for promotion or appoint- tment made a brave showing in the trial Foom. JOYOUS OVER HIS SUCCESS. ‘Outside of Commissioner Johnson and Civil Service Commissioner James Creel- am no one knew who had succeeded in examination for Chie¢ until 9 Wolock to-day. At that hour Commis- toner Johnaon gave out the names of Bhe four leading competitors. ‘Chief Kenlon made no attempt to con- eal hie joy. The examination was a Qeard ordeal for him. He is of @ nervous femperament ard worry in the past Qhree weeks has reduced his weight Bully twenty pounds. But he expects to take ® on again, now that the strain le over. Fou ewe nothing to any politician or to any other person. “When I became Mayor I issued an order that promotions must be made in mumerical order from the eligible lists, ‘My decision was hastened by the ence of a man who came to m wed me that although he was num- list, number 60 had been Bopointea over his head, “The influence of politicians in ap- pointments and promotions where civil @ervice rules are supposed to apply is ‘an abomination. To tell you the truth, I was never quite able to understand how they did it. Heard Him in House at Nor- folk, They Say, While He Talked to Beulah Binford. IDENTIFY THE PRISONER. Also “Other Woman” in Case as Person Whom He Urged to Go to Richmond. RICHMOND, Va, Aug. 1.—What the Prosecution regards as the strongest link in its case against Henry Clay Beattie jr, charged with the murder of his wife, was developed this after- noon when two rosidents of the segre- gated district of Norfolk, Va., brought on here, told Detective Scherer that they heard Beattie promise Boulah Bin- ford, the “other woman," in @ resort at Norfolk, that “he would get rid of his wife.” ‘The two witnesses were Ida Hildreth and Mabel Shafer. The latter told Scherer that one evening last April a party of two men and two women, one couple of which she identified as Beattie and the Binford girl, stopped at her place in Norfolk. The man, whom she asserted was Beattie, urged the girl to leave Norfolk and return to Richmond, and, according to her story, the girl, whom both women swore was Beulah, answered that “there wae noth- ing in it for her at Richmond” as long As Beattic's wife was living. According to the two women, the man answered that “he would get rid of his wife.” They said they then believed that the man meant “quit” by ‘get rid of.” When taken to the jail, both women were said to have positively identified both Beattie the girl. They will be returned to Norfolk this evening. Both signed a sworn statement to-day and promised to return to testify. Dime novels to-day supplanted the guitar as the solace and amusement of Henry Clay Reattie, locked’ up in Rich- mond Jall on the charge of murdering his wife. Aroused by Beattie's reported Geciaration that he “would make away with himself rather than go to the elec- tric chair,” the authorities saw danger in the strong, steel wire strings of the instrument which the accused man han strummed constantly in his waking hours since he entered the jail. They ordered the guitar taken a' t in stolid, sullen blood and thun- le of paper-covered of the instrument, the only personal which he selected possession he desired to have in his captivity, was a bitter one for the ac- cused man, and he subsided into a sul- len humor, declining to talk to his guards and burying himself in his lurid Hterature. WILL ASK FOR TRIAL ANOTHER COUNTY. Counsel for both skles to-day ex- pressed the belief that the trial of Beat- tle will Se moved from Chesterfleid County under an application for a change of venue. The prisoner will indicted within the next two weeks, and the trial is expected to begin, under the speedy methods of Virginia justice, be- fore the end of the montn.
