Denoh of No. 15 East Fi CREATES OBSTACLE TO HIS PROMOTION to Rescue Child Was Ter- ribly Burned. gam N HOSPITAL 13 MONTHS. is Hearing So Impaired He Cannot Enter Competitive Examination for Chief. An act of heroism prevents Thomas |, Ahearn, a» Deputy Fire Chief, from ibility for promotion to the chief- ip of the Fire Department to succeed lormer Chief Edward Croker, The fact ‘as called to the attention of Mayor ice Commission, Dear Mr. Mayor: Acting upon reports of medical experts this Comnisston has been compelled to refuse to permit Mr. Thomas J. Ahearn, a Deputy Fire Chief, to participate as a candidate in the forthcoming promotion exam- ination for Fire Chief of the city, on the ground that his powers of hearing are too much impatred to make {t possible for him to per- form all the duties of that ex- tremely important position. As Mr. Ahearn’s disability, which @0 deprives him of a chance to ful- fill his legitimate ambition, was partly incurred through a herolc deed done in the service of the city, I feel it proper to call your atten- tion to the case. On April 3, 18%, Mr. Ahearn, then a chief of battalion in the Fire Departmont, was pres- ent in the regular performance of his duty at @ fire in the ground floor flat at No. 2% Rivington street at midnight. He was informed that a ehild was cut off in a back room in the burning part of the building. CRAWLED THROUGH FIRE AND SMOKE TO SAVE. ‘Without a moment's hesitation he began to craw! on his hands and Knees through the fire and smoke to the room where the child was said to be; but when he got to the room he found that there was no child there. By that time it was imposs!- ble for him to get back to the street ‘dy the way in which he came. He Was overcome by the smoke, but man to struggle to his feet and tried to kick down the door leading to the hallway, He was overcome @ second time. ‘When the firemen reached him they found his foot sticking through the hole he had made tn the door, His head had been roasted by t flames and ‘his helmet was co’ pletely burned except the ‘arts. For thirteen months Ahearn was tn the hospital as @ sult of his frightful injuries, Mr. Creelman wrote: met M nd during six months of that time he was irrational. The permanent result of Mr. Ahearn's brave act was the aggrava- Uon of a sight defect In his ability to hear. One of his ears was almost fourned off. Medical evidence shows that but for the sacrifice made by him on that night for the sake of the life of a little child he would now be competent to take part in the pro- motion examination for Fire Chief. It seems to me—and my fellow Commissioners join in the sugges- tion—that this 1s @ proper case and a proper time for the city to do POLICE RUSHED FROM LONDON 10 CHECK SHIP RIOTS Strike Mobs at Hull Fight All Through Night-»Marine Tie-up Still Bad. HULL, Engiand, June %.—The weigh- borhood of the docks furnishes ample testimony to the severity of the shipping strike rioting here, which continued until the early hours of to-day. LONDON, June 9%.—The shipping strike has assumed the nature of an endless chain, No sooner is @ settlement reached in one quarter than a disagree- ment appears in another. The situation at Hull was #0 riotous through the night that 500 London police were despatched hurriedly to that port thls morning. LIVERPOOL, June 30.—Despite all con- cessions made, the shipping strike situa- tlon showed no improvement to-day. The doskhands are now demanding a guar- antes that the wage advances will not be merely temporary. The Shipping Federation threatens to take steps chat will result in laying up half the shipping tonnage of the country, The White Star Line to-day declared @ lockout against all the men employed upon their Liverpool steamers with the exception of the officers and engineers and is trying to obtain nonunion crews.
