WHITE WINGS PARADE ALONG FIFTH AVENUE 4,000 Men and 1,000, Horses of Street Cleaning Depart- ment Reviewed by Mayor. After having been delayed twenty-five minutes by rain, the annual parade of the Street Cleaning Department, the biggest show of the sort that New York or any other city ever sees, got under way from Fifth avenue and Sixty-fitth street this afternoon and headed for the grandstand at Madison Square where Mayor Gaynor, Commissioner Edwards and a lot of city officiais and invited Ruests wer@waiting to review the turn- out. The shower had drenched the white wings and made their spotless, starchy uniforms limp, but the water on the horses and wagons only made the well gtoomed coats of the animals and the Polished brass work on harness and gear shine the brighter. All along the Tie of “inarch” crowds were gathered to cheer acquaintances among the proud white wings. There were twenty-one brass bands too—one for each division in tine—and the music, with flags and bunting, helped to make the show still braver. Lieut. McCarthy of the Trac Squad. with twelve mounted policemen, led the way, followed by Capt. John F. Carroll, the grand marshal, and his aides, ali on horseback, with wide sashes and high hats. partment of two large divisions under Inspector O'Donnell; the Brooklyn and Queens department of eight divisions under Inspector Cunningham; the Maf- hattan and Richmond department of eleven divisions under Deputy Com- missioner Adamson, and mechanical divisions of twenty-five separate models of pleaners, dump carts, wagons and Altogether, there were 4,000 men, 1,000 vehicles in the procession. In the grand stand with the Mayor were the three judges with a stiver plaque for the banner division and prizes for the best individual showings.
