HOLDS RECEPTION FOR PRISONERS HE HAS PAROLED — More Than 100 Well-Dressed ‘Men and Women Report to Judge Crain. CALLS THEM “GUESTS.” Nearly All Had Lived Rightly When Told to “Go and Sin No More.” Known only by number so that ny embarrassing publicity might be avotd-| @4, more than 100 men and women.came Wednesday night to the Criminal Court Building where Judge Crain, of the Court of General Sessions, held his eemi-annual reception for those who had come before him ducing the four Years of his judicial administration upon criminal charges and who had been allowed another chance to make fo0d tn the world. And, justifying the humanitarian ideas noarly all of the well- @ressed throng whose individuais had deen told to go and #in no more, came with stories of prosperity and correct living. A number of priests and min- isters of the gospel watched the pro- ceedings. Father Thomas J. Lynch, of the Protective Catholic League; Father Luke Evers, ohapiain at the Tombs, and other well known folk sat near he judge. There were young fellows who had started out to see the bright light side of life and found the pace too fast for honest pocketbooks, who had been tempted and who fell. There were women who had seen things in stores that ited covetous desire for pos- jon. There were men who had per ™ mitted drink to take them from the better life and men who had become criminals in name by the act of an evil moment for which much repent- ance had been done. Once a month a detadied report of the conduct of the Judge's changes upon whom he had suspended sentence is made to him, He knew from these ports and from the reports of Probation officers just which of gueste—he referred to tham as ‘guests’ ought to come up to the bench and hold some speech with their protector admonitions and advice went to the per- son for whom it was intended only. None of the other gueste knew whether @ fellow was being praised for worthy attempt at right living or etven a quiet dressing down for falling to live up to the letter of an agreement to “tote fair with the Judge.” DOESN'T BELIEVE IN KILLING GOOD IN MANKIND, ‘The judicial face did not betray what things passed in the private talks. The whole transaction was an exemplifica- tion of Judge Crain's theory that the killing the great preponderance of good ‘fm mankind for the sake of punishing the small percentage of bad. Probation officers nad slipped about the room handing the various guests number on them, nted a name that i, Was before the clerk of the court. If the Judge desired a talk he whispered to the clerk and the clerk called—not the name, but the number. And there were no introductions among tie £7 The men eittiog next to you dint know whether you had cone under puapended sentence for stealing or had merely dropped in to watch the recep- tion. It was the echeme to close the dook of every woman's every man’s in to the world, with the exception of the Judge and the individual concerned. Taiking to the visitors, the Judge aaid: “Tam lad toses you hers to-night, and Iwant every one of you to feel that I eve a personal interest in you and in your conduct.
