Survivors Picked Up by Crew of Second Ves- sel and Men of Rescue Vessels—Captaia, a Hero, Goes to Death On His Ship. a” (Special to The Evening World.) ‘SAN FRANCISCO, July 22.—One hundred and fifty-one lives have been lost in a collision off Shelter Cove, Mendicino County, Cal., between the coast steamers Columbia and San Pedro. The disaster, which is one of the most-appalling in the history of this dangerous coast, occurred at mid- night on Saturday, but owing to the wild nature of the country the sur- vivors were unable to communicate with the world before. According to advices received here the Columbia was rammed and sank ‘instantly, carrying with her one-half of her complement of Ppas- sengers and crew. The San Pedro, though badly damaged, stood by, _ but was unable to do much in the work of rescue. ~~ President Frey of the San Francisco and Portland Steamship Com- pany, to-day gave out the following figures relating to the disaster: “Cabin passengers upon the Columbia, 168; steerage passengers, 21; total passengers, 189; crew, 60:—Fhis makes -a-totat-of 249-on-board: “Reported -saved, 98; unaccounted for, 154." |® Mr. Frey would not vouch for the accuracy of these figures. , There were many women passengers aboard the Columbia and it fs stated that not-one-of them was saved. “The coast in the spot where the disaster occurred is badty supplied with lights and frequent marine tragedies have occurred there. The rash occurred in one of the dense fogs peculiar to this part of, the Pa- cific coast. ‘The scenes on board when the two vessels struck ‘vere appalling.
