¢ ‘ i : i : BLAME POLICE FOR COLLAPSE WHICH COST SEVEN LIVES Telephoned Wrong Number of House) in Danger, Building Department Says, and Inspector Sent to In- vestigate Reported All Safe. The loss of seven lives and the senous injury of four persons in the | Collapse of the old tenement at No. 93 Walker street is said to-day to fhave been due to a blunder by the police that was made in sending the report of the building’s condition over the telephone a few: hours before the disaster. Supt. Murphy, of the Building Department, says that this report came early last night from Lieut. Kelly, of the Elizabeth street police station. It was received at the bureau by Peter H. Raub, night inspector. The Superintendent says that Raub was informed over the wire that the building at Nos, 94 and.96 Lafayette street was in danger of collapse. Raub says that he hurried downtown and inspected the building in question, but could find nothing to indicate that it was unsafe. Kelly denies positively that he gave the numbers 94 and 96, but No. 98, whict was the number of the Lafayette street wing of the collapsed tenement. | According to Supt. Murphy the loss of life would have been pre- vented had his department been properly notified. He thus puts the | blame up to the police Capt.
