*® COUNTER ORDERS OUT. “CHIEF CROKER | (EEPS UP WAR ON HAYES MEN Sends Firemen Who Had Been ‘on Special Duty Back to Firehouses. ALL BELONG TO PINKIES. Their Organization Has Been Favored by Hayes as Against the Boxers, John O'Brien, the New Commis- sioner, Will Have to Exercise Unusual Diplomacy. A bitter feht of long standing be- tween Nicholas J. Hayes, who retired from the office of Fire Commissioner yesterday, and Chief Croker, of the Fire Department, was uncovered to-day when forty firemen reported at the Chis office in Headquarters in obe- @ience to a telephone order eent out last night. These men have been on special duty @t Headquarters by virtue o fthe favor of Mr. Hayes, but Chief Croker has Eent them back to the various fire- houses from which they were detailed and this action furnished a picturesque wind up to the Hayes-Croker feud in so far as Mr. Hayes was concerned as Fire Conemiesioner. As Sheriff, it is ant!- cipated, he will carry on the fight. Friction Began Early. Chief Croker, fresh from his triumph over Fire Commissioner Sturgis, went back Into the department under Com- miasioner Hayes with a dete. mination to Fun the uniformed force. He found that the Commissioner was not in sym- pathy with many of his ideas. There is no compromise in Croker's make-up, @nd he declared war.
