But bigness of business is. It is illustrative. Shows that public approval stands behind the enter- And without the public's generous in- dorsement no great institution like this can succeed, “Wnivensis We began big. We have been doing . things on a big scale ever since. Each year finds this business growing bigger. Each succeeding year compelled us to expand in various directions. Departments thet began with big space grew so fast that we had to give them ampler quarters. Departments that started less conspicuously soon outgrew their accommodations, too, and had to be properly cared for. Some departments were moved into other sections on the same floor and given increased space. Others were removed to entirely different floors, where they could meet the demands of their fast expanding business without visible embarrassment. We had to take the Furniture from the Third Floor and put it on the Fifth. And even now with its present tremendous area of square feet it is crowded for space. China, Glassware, Rugs, Carpets, Housefurnishings of every description, including Blankets, Linens, Upholstery and the like, Groceries, Shoes. Milli- nery, Jewelry, Pianos, Leather Goods, Wearing Apparel, Books and too many others to enumerate, thrived so lustily that they out- grew ther departments. “More space!” was the cry heard continuaily. It was a problem presenting many came duly, with resultant satisfaction. We built a large structure on the roof. This we converted into a stockroom, taking many surplus or reserve stocks from vari- ous floors and locating them there. We built an extensive annex to the east side of the store, and in this addition we placed many of the various offices. We built a great warehouse some distance from the store. In this building we store immense quantities of merchandise, for the warehouse is as large as some prosperous department stores. By this we acquired thousands of feet of floor space in the store proper: and on this floorage we are now displaying and sell- ing merchandise. In this substantial manner has the growth of the establishment progressed. ; There are now 86 complete specialty stores under the roof of this mammoth establishment. More will be added as circum- stances require. We have more salespeople than ever before. We have originated and introduced shopping facilities and comforts that have been widely copied. All in the line with growth. The Siegel Coo, difficulties, but solutions er Store was the first establishment to be conriected with an Elevated Railroad Station. You can enter the store from either uptown or downtown platform of the 18th Street Station of the 6th Ave. “L” Road without descending to the street. ! J Thousands of people use this mode of ingress. . These and other evidences of growth are all duly impressive, for they teach what may be accomplished by good and careful storekeeping.
