ARREST HIM ON A CHARGE OF FORGERY. Checks Stolen, Indorsed and Then Cashed Through Ac- count Opened at Bank in Name of Payee. After three years, the police, atded by the Pinkerton detectives, have ar- rested Henry Amsel, of No, 104 West One Hundred and Tenth street, who, elthough only twenty-two years old, they declare is a succesful bank swindler, It te alleged that he stole letters containing checks from private letter boxes in New York, Brooklyn, Jersey City and Newark and then ob- tained money on them by forgery and false representation, Pinkertons declare he has swindled at least ten banks in and around New York out of an aggregate of more than $6,000, In the Tombs Court to-day Pinkerton detectives informed the Magistrate that Amsel operated chiefly with checks stolen from letter boxes of downtown merchants, Obtaining the business card of @ merchant in the nelghborhood of the bank he intended to swindle he would call at the bank, represnt himself to be the merchant whose name was on the card and open an acocunt with the checks he had stolen from tho let- ter boxes, first forging the indorso- ments of the firms to whom the checks were made payable on the back of the checks. Amsel knowing the amount of Ume that would elapse before the loss of the checks would become known had sufficient time to withdraw all but a small amount in each instance, On Jan. 3 last, the Pinkertons say, Amsel called at the Monroe Bank, No. 97 Canal street, and represented him- self as Henry Rosen, of the firm of Rosen & Herman, and stated thet he wished to open an account with @he bank, The paying teller recognized Rosen” as one Henry Amiel, who hi erly had an account with the ba Amsel opened an account under the name of Rosen & Herman, depositing several checks stolen from letter-boxes, After the arrest of Amsel, J, Dynen- feld, paying teller of the jank, nroe positively identified hin, would attend immediately are here. in the country—because the You must not miss this one. that were $12.50, $15 and $18, now... and $20, now....
