They were turning the corner of Albany avenue near thelr homes when they heard the sound of hurrying footsteps, Both boys stopped when they heard the poarse call of: "Stop, or I'll fire.” ‘This cry was repeated and the two boys started to dodge behind a tree, ‘when the flash of an exploded shell in a revolver burst out in front of them ‘and young Hallinan fell to the ground with @ fatal wound in his abdomen, ‘The shot had been fired by Pollceman McGowan, He had been on beat near the Hallinan home when 4 woman rushed Into the street and told him that @ number of negroes were destroying her furniture, * He got into the house just as the negroes were going out. As one of them went by him he threw a club at ‘the policeman, McGowan took up the ghase and twice the negro stopped and threw stones back at his pursuer, Thea in the heat of the chase McGowan or- dered the negro to stop, and as he failed to do so he fired, The bullet went wide and struck the boy, who ‘Was roturning to vis home. Later McGowan found the negro in @the cellar of @ house within a few doors of the police station.
