(Special to The Evening World.) SARATOGA, Aug, 11.—Of course no @ne but an expert veterinarian could wey whether Lord of the Vale was “doped” or not, and so 11 ls not for the writer to say that he was. To the lay- man of tho turf, however, Lord of the “Vale appeared to act most strangely, He came to the post highly strung and very nervous, There was lather enough on his neck and shoulders to shave a regiment of soldiers, The first thing he did when turned to the barrier wes to make a wild bolt and a plunge, and he ran an eighth of a mile before Lyne could pull him up. Then when he was brought back he had to be held at the post. This was strange behavior and ‘ange appear- ance for Lord of the V who has peretofore been well behaved. Some horses when overtrained become highly nérvous and excitable, and the probabill- tles are that Lord of the Vale was in that condition yesterday. His race was @ very bad one when compared with his superb performance in the Saratoga Handicap, It ts said that he has developed a bad quarter crack and that this was the reason for his condition and poor per- formance yesterday, Lord of the Vale's chances of winning the Saratoga Cup were highly thought of, but the chances are now that he will not be a starter. Robadf got away from his attendant yesterday and ran about the paddock for some time before he was caught. This did not bother him In his race, for he went on and won in clever fashion. Strange horse Bobadil, one day a slow beginner and far in the rear, an- * other day out in front and running like a deer. Surely a creature of moods, this horse, Last year, for instance, as & two-year-old Bobadil acquired the well-earned reputation of being a very vlow beginner, He lost race after race by being so slow at the post. Then he changed hands, and with the change of ownership there came @ change of amazed every one the rted In his new owner's colors by breesing to the front and run- ning like @ tin-canned dog. But he did rot always do this, Sometimes he would have plenty of speed and on ions he would have noney A Bobadil. He was heavily erday, by the way, ‘This story is only written as illustrat ing the pecullarities of thoroughbreds. Many more stories might be written of other pecullar thoroughbreds, and so might stories be written of pecullar owners, peculiar bookmakers, peculiar trainers and peculiar jockeys. In a werd, the racing game is most peculiar, mat Dope. trict provisions In the rules of racing against the use of “dope,” one hears so much about the use of it about the track that it seems to be in the air, Horses run bad races and show no speed. The betting be- trays no disposition on the part of any one to back these horses when they have their slow periods, But suddenly the slow horse shows indications of life in the betting ring, Money goes down in chunks, He comes to the post a rejuve: angine, His coat shines like satin his arched neck glows with pers; tion. The crowd nudge one another and whisper; ‘This is the day—! t Juice tn him to-day,” But all horses that act this way are not ‘doped.’ Some are highly nervous animals who break into Meit rpg at the slightest disturbance, gat to the post glistening and prapaiae and are set down as being doped. But in these Instances the crowd Is mistaken. It takes the nervous perspiration and feverish energy for the warmth and "One wou te (dees dope. ne woul wry about saying ¢ Lord of the Vi ped"yesterday, for two tenenne, t he i ihe Eres of the ‘cnatrman ‘of ‘ne J ye ay ‘ieclea Shieedon fo gay pr ig a eee ai ie, ete sentie phigh clase. i. wate future might be te hat dope, a WARD AND WRIGHT, WINNERS OF TENNIS DOUBLES | WRIGHT AND WARD WIN; ARE DOUBLES CHAMPIONS. — Hundreds of NEWPORT, Aug MURPHY GETS ON MATCH WITH NEIL THIS MONTH Johnny Rurdick, which will be decided in private Friday night.
