‘WOULONTT ORINK 10 ThE HEALTH OF KING EDWARD Attempt to Couple His Name with that of the Pope at a Banquet in Ireland Provesa Failure—Dunraven Attempts to-Capture a Dublin Newspaper. (Special Correspondence of The Brening World.) (From our Regular Correspondent.) DUBLIN, Ireland, July 80.—The omission of the toast of “The King” et the banquet in Armagh, following the consecration of the Cathedral, ‘s Fegarded everywhere as a defeat of the Government. As originally ar fanged, the toast to be proposed was “The Pope and King,” but the ex- | mag pooh gts gga lalallala allies i from the private tonst list, On the arrival of the Duke of Norfolk in the country, however, Me ‘used every effort to induce Cardinal Logue to restore the omitted words, ‘and {t was freely stated in Armagh that the Cardinal had yielded, and the toast would be proposed. A strong protest from many of the lay Catholics present led to its being abandoned, much to the chagrin of the Duke of Norfolk, who, when he rose to speak afterward, was received with one solitary cry of “Long “Hive the Duke of Norfolk!" followed by a distinct hiss from a considerable section of those present, Cardinal Vanutelli, the Papal Legate, who was present at the cere mony, visited Dublin the following day and was presented by the Corpora- , tion with an address in the Irish language, O'BRIEN CROSSES SWORDS WITH REDMOND. William O’Brien’ has not attempted any reply to Mr. Davitt's scathing letter, but he has replied with great acerbity to a letter written by John Redmond, milly rebuking Mr. O’Brien’s supporters in Cork for seeking to etir up “dissension” by dwelling on dead personal issues. Mr, O'Brien, who nine months ago announced that he had retired definitely from public fe and that no consideration would induce him) to re-enter it, now assails Mr, Redmond for seeking to “drive him out of /public life.” It is currently reported that Mr. O’Brien is about to purchase the Datly Independent and Evening Herald newspapers, which are now being Tun at an annual loss of $40,000, in the interests of the tram monopoly and of Sir John Nutting, an Englishman, in the liquor trade in Dublin, who has political ambitions, and start @ new, or “Centre” party, which will comprise Nutting, Sir Horace Plunkett, Lord Dunraven and other Unionists, as well as some of the nominal Nationaliste—this party to agree to differ about Home Rule, and to work for “reforms,” DUNRAVEN IN A PLOT. The villain of the plece is Lord Dunraven, who {s one of the ablest and most unscrupulous of Irish politicians, Dunraven {s deep in the confidence of the Government, but his magnetic personality has completely fascinated Mr, O'Brien. Lord Dunraven, by the way, is a stockbroker under an assumed name fn London, and the great-grandson of 8 member of the Irish Parliment, who was “ennobled” and pald £15,000 by the British Government for vot- ing for the Act of Union. Recently Dunraven, Nutting and some others, laid a plot to capture the Freeman’s Journal by buying up its shares on the Dublin Stock Ex- change. which the Freeman indulged. Mr, Sexton, the Managing Director of the Freeman, discovered the plot and refused delivery of the shares. WOUI,D NOT EXPOSE THE PLOT, } By going into court, Dunraven and Nutting could, of course, compel him to deliver, but as going into court meant giving publicity to their operations, they were afraid to proceed, and the plot completely failed, ‘The eighth Oireachtas, the annual festival of the Gaelic League, opens in Dyblin and will continue until the end of the week. The object of the Gaclfc League 1s primarily the revival of the Irish language as the spoken tongue of the whole country; secondly, the creation of a modern Irish Mterature, and thirdly the encouragement and development of Irisa in- dustries, This year an industrial exhibition was held in connection with the gathering. From the annual report it appears that nearly 200,000 children out of the 750,000 attending schools in the country are now being taught the Irish language, and although this is a small proportion, {t must be recol- lected that ten years ago there were not 5,000 children being taught Irish in the schools, NODISCRIMINATION SAS LEISHMAN American Minister Demands | that Sultan Shall Grant Full Privileges to Our Schools, Hospitals and Institutions. on & full acceptance of the American list of about three hundred schools, hoa- Pitals, charitable Institutions and mis- slonary dwellings filed with the Porte eighteen months ago.
