THE WORLD: THURSDAY EVENING, JULY 41, 1904, ‘OCKEFLLERS BY ANOTHER COMPANY Soquire Westchester Lighting and Turn it Over to Their Enormously Wealthy Consol- Idated Gas, Rockefeller Interests within the last ow days have carried out a deal by thich the Consolidated Gas Company @ Sew York, which has a practical senvpoly of the light, heat and power vatput of the city, secures a controlling nterest in the Westchester Lighting Company, which for twenty years has enjoyed @ monopoly of twenty-seven towns and municipalities In Westches- ter County, The process of absorption has been & gradual one and carried on quietly. Not until yesterday was it discovered how far the sale of stoc khad gone, and, tracing the movement, {t was learned that the Rookefeller interests, control- ling the Consolidated Gas Company, have been the purchasers. The Westchester Lighting Company 's & corporation which has grown on profit and water to a capitalization of $22,600,000. Having a clear feld, it did ot come into collision with the Rocke- feller interests in 1900, when the Stand- ird and New Amsterdam Compa- ales of New York City were driven into the trust by a war that kept gas fown to sixty-five cents for nine months. With the end of the gas war the three companies still held thelr In- dividuality, but it was announced that they had “arrived at a friendly agree- ment.” ‘This “friendly agreement" resulted in the boosting of the price of gas from cents te $1.96 on thy day the agreament arrived at, The Consolidated Gas ompany has since been In absolute ontrol In New York City, It i falized at $80,000,000, and ft wa jompany that mane yaa a through blac vuln: ‘ou aeavy stockholders, Individually hile officials of. the Westchester ny denied yesterday that the con- rolling Interest had been acqu'red by he Consolidated, they would not deny tement that Rockefeller interests ‘@ been able to secure large blocks of is not known whet! understood ‘the polloy and ony o tne h compeny we! re- main same, wit gradu: change of the directors and ee Sete : LOERS ANGRY AT ROSEEL Consider His Boom for Root Now to Be a Slap at the \eadership of Gov. Odell. If Secretary Loeb had taken @ hand it “mizing up" the Republican situa- fon in New York State he could not yave achieved greater success as a ‘rouble-maker than has President Rowsevelt himself in putting new liftp into the Elihu Root boom for Governor, The rank and file of the Republican machine werkers all over the State are up in arms over the President's in- terference, and they intend to resent \t at the State Convention in Septem- der if it la worth while. They will not consider resentment worth while If at that time It is ap- Parent that the State has been lost to the Democrats, In that event they will step aside, let Roosevelt pick the can- didate for Governor and for all the other offices if he wants to do so, Then they will “put it up” to Roosevelt to elect his proteges. Mr. Roosevelt, it is well understood, wants Mr. Root nominated for Gover- hor, So does Senator Platt. If Root is Dut at the head of the ticket it will be regarded as a knockout blow for the leadership of Gov, Odell, and, it Root should be elected, the Platt men frankly say that they would look for the quick downfall of Odell, During the last few days many {m- portant up-State Republicans have been in the city, and they have all made one report, That {s, that the Federal ofice-holders, supposedly under instructions from the head of the Am- ministration are working to elect Roosevelt delegates to the coming State Convention. The Roosevelt and Platt men are trying to form com- binations in various sections. “Up in my county,” sald an up-State leader at the Fifth Avenue Hotel yes- terday, ‘the postmasters are becoming very active and are ey ss to elect deie- gatee they can contro have frankly sees, The only beopss @ ¢ getting any advan- we ce This statement, which Is true of three- fourths of the counties north of the Bronx, expresses the feelings of the me who are now in control of the Sta ganization and who control the Ther bay Mea it feenaves: the Folger 5 soe sweep the oe Brate tna’ the Republi. ization would be swamped. jt has shut himself ina o the a nd is pli v and is k of the cam iP el charms for Summer shoppers.
