CONFERENCE WAY ENO BEEF STRIKE Armour Must Accept Terms of the; Striking Butchers or Other Affiliated Organizations Will Call Out Their Men and Famine Will Be Worse, CHICAGO, July 20,—The conference between the packers and strikers, | which was demanded yesterday by the Chicago and American Federations! of Labor, has been granted by the peckers and will take place to-day, if this conference had been refused all of the employees of the stock-yards * swho ere not already on atrike would have gone out in sympathy with the butchers, and the tie-up of the meat industry would have been com- Dlete. If peace is to come it will have to come out of to-day’s joint con- ference. If this day's deliberations do not end the strike a long tle-up fa which all classes of labor will take pare is sure to come. President Donnelly, of the Meat Cutters, was pleased over the agreement of the packers to grant another conference, but made it clear that if there fa to be peace the packers must give in. He sald to-day that the terms of the strikers were unalterable. “We are in splendid financial shape," he said, “and can get all the ald that we want.” MORE PAY FOR STRIKE BREAKERS. The strike breakers in the stock yards took advantage of the situation today to make a demand for more money. They have bean geting $3 a day, but asked for $4 and $5. Their demands were granted at once. Many people are sceptical as to the good which will come from another eonterence, but the action of the unions in doing all they can to make peace before going on a sympathetic strike is generally applauded. Republican politicians in Illinois are looking with great apprehension on the situation, They are doing all they can to force some settlement, reailaing that tho situation, if it gets any worse, will certainly endanger Reputiican success in the State next fall. There are rumors that agents of President Rooseveit are in the city, sleuthing around, but If they are they have not yet pubdliciy shown themselves, That the President regards the Ilnols situation as ominous and would like to take a hand in the matter there is no doubt. If the President is to do anything he will probably do it before to-morrow might, for after that it is not belleved that anything can prevent the gen- eral strike, which only months of work can settle. An extraordinary number of unions joined in the request for the joint conference. The request was signed by the representatives of the Teamsters’ Union, International Union of Steam Engineers, International Brotherhood of Sta- tionary Firemen, Coopers’ Union, Association of Steamfitters’ Helpers, Brotherhood of Electrical Workers. Carpenters, Carworkers, Millwrights and Machinery Erectors’ Union, Blacksmiths, Journeymen Horseshoers’ Union, the Chicago Federation of Labor and the American“Federation of INCREASE IN PRIGES OF —— To-day —— Before strike, Rew.trade.T: seove MRO 8c Jide ¥ THE WORLD? I am going right back to Chicago myself and when I get there I will know better what the situation {s, Meantime men are work- ing in the different departments at the yards, and we have plenty of men to carry on the business.” Mr, and Mrs. Armour started for Chicago at once. It developed to-day that the New York butchers are doing business with two sets of prices. Old customers got meat to-day at the same price as was asked of them yesterday and the day before, but the newcomer who has been dubbed “transient trade” is catching the brunt of @ steep advance. An Evening World reporter visited half a dozen meat dealers of Man- bettan, and in each ‘nstance was asked if his name were upon the dealer's hooks before a price was quoted. Only regular customers are allowed to buy at the rate of yesterday. Yhe situation at the thirty odd distributing points of the Meat Trust tn Manhattan was practically unchanged to-day. The meat dealers were still ¢utting their own meat, and lugging it out to their own delivery wagons, gave in the case of several large wholesale dealers, who have placated the wrikers, Upon receipt of communications from theee large dealers, who empioy anion men exclusively, the Advisory Committee of the strikers permitted members of Local No. 283 to lug meat from the cold storage plant of Sohwarzschild & 3ulsberger on First avenue to the wagons, LOCKOUT A FIZZLE SH CARPENTERS @ Eight Hundred Men Seeking, Jobs in Other Boroughs and| Are Being Rapidly Engaged, Reports Council Secretary. ‘The sight hundred locked-out car-| enters of Manhattan to-day are seek-| fag jobs in the other boroughs, and, Secretary Daniel Featherson, of their Joint District Council, says they were Deing rapidly placed again in employ. ment. ‘The District Council of the Bruther- hood last night turned the situation over to the Strike Committee of the vot ooo A eed sates wil Frida: al Teetive a Bare, from Chairman John ns fo have planned nv move,” said Secretary We are content to let to other bo hi \ hare ‘are ihw carpenters is tie ater city, and this is the busy eea- | Sa This con- Mrvabiony, 330 to 34th Strert Genuin \s made simply to advertice my stores. yuu need. fect satisfaction given with each and every pair, Scientific and Manufactering Optician.
