~—- THE NEWS ‘NELSON-HANLON FIGHT "SHOULD PROVE A TREAT Hanlon, a Great Favorite in the West, Will Have Hard Nut to Crack in the “Battling” Boy, and a Knockout May Be Expected. BY ROBERT EDGREN. “Battling” fon, ‘Frisco fight fans have a treat io @ore for the 28th of this month. ‘Thi will be the best fight between small men that the Pacific coast has seen since J, Edward Britt peppered “Young Corbett” out of a champlion- + ship. Eddie Hanlon is, with the possible exception of Britt, the greatest favor- ite of Western fight followers. He has won his popularity in a score of hard-fought battles, and his backers Mever have been disappointed in his showing. Since entering the ring as & professional fighter Hanlon has lost twice. The first was in October, ’01, when he was knocked out by Abe Attell, At that time he was only teen years old, and it was in one of his first fights, He fought a twenty- round draw with Attell not long afterward. ‘The other reverse was in the recent fight with “Young Corbett,” Dec, 29, when the Denverite succeeded in placing a blow on Hanlon’s jaw that put him on Queer street in the four- teenth round and won out. Only a little over a year ago Han- lon fought “Corbett,” nearly put him Out im the eighteenth round, and was given a draw with the conqueror af Terry McGovern, Bddie is only nineteen now and will do some great fighting before he Apishes with the ring. : The ‘Frisco youngster has Nelson vs. Eddie Han- 4 peculiar fighting st®@e He uses a ba Grouch of original design, unlike any- *, thing that Jeffries or Tommy Ryan ever thought of, Hanlon brings both hands up close to his face and drops bis head forward. In that position he sheds blows as a turtle sheds rain drops. It {s nearly impossible to land fairly on his chin or his body, or to get past his forearms or elbows with any kind of a blow. Clever Abe Attell tried it without success. At the same time he is able to bit hard blow himself. He forces his way in close, never letting a punch FAST GALLOPING AT GRAVESEND GRAVESEND, N, ¥,, Juty The training conditions at the race course this morning were moat pleasant. He whipped “Spider” Welch, the crack 180-pound fighter, with ease, and then fought Martin Canole in San Francisco, Canole was thought to be the coming champion. He made a wonderful fight against Jimmy Britt; last season, losing the decision by @ small margin in twenty-five rounds. All the “wise” ones on the coast expected to see Canole fight all around Nelson, He did for a few rounds, and then the wallop of the fighter with the scrappy name was too much for him, Canole was tired and dazed when he got the final smash in the sixteenth, and he weat down to stay, As the local favorite Eddie Hanlon Will have the best men in ‘Frisco in| CYCLING TITLE his corner, Billy Delaney will act as chief adviser, The fight will be held in the arena of the Hayes Valley Athletic Club under the management of Billy Roche, As uaual in San Francisco, the local boy will be on the long end of the betting.
