BY ROBERT EDGREN. Bob Fitzsimmons, light heavy-weight champion, retired middle-weight chempion and ex-heavy-welght champion of the world, is training again as he did to wrest the big title from James J Corbett. The battle with “Phil- ‘adelphia Jack” O’Brien is now only a couple of weeks away, and Fitzsim- mons takes no needless risks. While the fact may not be advertised, the light heavy-weight cham- Pionship is involved. Fitz meets O'Brien at 165 pounds, and should he go down before “Jumping Jack's" rapid fire the title will change hands. Few sporting authorities will concede such a Possibility. Fitzsim- mons's prestige is still so great that none who have seen him mix merrily | With Corbett, Rulflin, Sharkey and Jeffries can believe it possible for a man of his own weight to whip him. George Gardner, in San F rancisco, at 165 pounds, proved easy picking for the veteran in spite of the fact that Pite- simmons fought fifteen rounds out of twenty with both hands broken O'Brien is a faster and more cluver fighter than Gardner, and less n ‘yous in va ring. Waterside, rated as one of the best of the two-year-olds, was easily beaten by Flyback. In the Suburban the defeat of The Picket and Irish Lad was seen, and Her- mls was once more Installed on the pedestal of public favor, Whether the process of dethronement will go on this week 4s problematic. Beldame and Audience have @ chance to meet in the Mermaid Stakes on Thurs- day. This race {s at a mile and a fur- long and will thoroughly test the fillies. Beldame and Audience stand out as the best fillies of the season in the three- year-old division, and since Audience has shown such good form there has been a desire to see a meeting between her and Beldame. ‘There 1s no reason for cither owner to duck a meeting, for the stake {s worth about $6,600 and 1s worth the winning. Saturday fs, of course, the ble day of the week so far as stakes are concerned. The Great Trial, for two-year-olds, with |& value of $26,000, {s one feature, and the Advance Stakes, a weight-for-age race at @ mile and three furlongs, is another. The Great Trial is the richest | two-year-old stake of the meeting, and it ts remarkable for the fact that none of the high-class two-year-olds is en- gaged. Song and Wine, Blandy, Glori- fler and others are conspicuous by their absence. Flyback, on the form he displayed in the Foam Stakes on Saturday, looks to hold the stake at his mercy. The con- | tenders appear to be Veto, Right Royal, | Agile, The Claimant, Bristling, Voladay and Sparkling Star. From the latter will come the most danger to Flyback's chances of success. He ran a cracking good race tn the Double Bvent, and he was withdrawn from the Foam Stakes last Saturday to save his maiden allow- ance. Tom Healy must be sanguine of Sparkling Star's chances when he would let the Foam go by, for he could have been in that race with an eight-pound allowance, which would have given him a grand chance. The Advance Stakes. The Advance Stakes should furnish one of the grandest races of the year it all of the good horses are not keut in their stalls, The eligibles are Hermls, winner of the Suburban; The Picket, winner of the Brooklyn; Irish Lad, win- ner of the Metropolitan; Ort Wells, win- ner of the Tidal; Waterboy, last year’s champion; Delhi, winner of the Withers and belmont; Highball, winner of the American Derby, There are others, but surely the above list 1s the quintessence of ‘all that is richness on the turf, If all these horses should go to the post there would be the race of the century. It would be a race that would certainly draw the greatest crowd that has ever attended i race- meet in this country, and the raco would he so Intensely Interesting that it would bring that vast crowd to its toes and hold them there In a delicious delight from the first jump to the last. There ig no reason why these horses should not_ go. ‘The three-year-olds, Delhi and Ort. Wells, may pot go, for the icason that their’ owners might not vant to injure thelr chances in the Rea- zation, and at weight for age in the Advance they would have none the best Me Suit bre Wells rant mile and a quarter in ‘the Tidal in 2.06, carrying 126 pounds, With fifteen pounds ‘off he SPORTSMEN’S GOODS. s.OPKINS It not only folds, but | it pal it’sahed 6% by | 24%.
