Maing of special interest in the turt world, are beginning to turn thelr at- tention to the Suburban. The fact that Africander {s showing a return to his form will lend increased dnter- est to that event, for. should the Su- burban be run on the same kind of a track as prevailed last year. there would be no denying the fact that Africander would have a chance to repeat. ‘History does not record a repeater in either the Brooklyn or Buburban. - Irish Lad was within six inches of being a repeater, and that 1s, perhaps, the record. If Africander should do the same trick it would be a very interesting coincidence in the history of these two great rave-norses. Some of the critics will not admit that Africander §s coming back to form. They declare that African- victory over Hurst Park was due to the fact that Hurst Park sulked all through the last quarter. If this i# true, then it fs the first time in his career that Hurst Park has ever sulked. His whole record ls one of extraordinarily game rac with not a trace “of the sulker's form, The chances are that Africander has been babled a bit this year, because / of his tender legs. He received a. ter- rifle gruelling last year, but the more he raced the better he seemed. He was raced right back after his defeat by Major (Daingerfleld, and certainly showed a remarkable improvement, Whether Waterboy will be ready for the Suburban is a mooted question. He has been going along nicely, but he is a hard horse to fit. As he is the apple of Mr. Haggin's eye, he ‘ does not Intend that the grand son of Watercress shall be hvrried, and it ‘may be that he will make no start until the Brighton ds reached. McChesney will be an absentee, as | toa. THE lb SUBURDAN RACE? he has gone lame again. But Irish Lad will be facing the starter, with all his bells on, and so will The Picket and Proper, who were the three con- tendera in the Brooklyn. The possible addition of Delhi would make the race interesting, for, with only a feather to carry, there is no telling how fast this three-year-old could step off the first mile. The run- ning of the Belmont leaves no room for doubt as to his ability to travel the mile and @ quarter route, though it must be confessed that he did not beat much. ‘There {8 so much quality represented in Irish Lad and The Picket, that it seems doubtful if khis three-year-old could repeat the great feats of Irish Lad and Africander. Mr, Keene thinks Delhi the greatest three-year-old ‘that he ever owned. Mr. Keene probably forgets Commando. If there ever was @ race-horse, from his plates to the tip pf his tall, Commando was that horse. However, the question of merit as between Delhi and Commando is only a matter of opinion, as there | no Wway of determining ‘the relative merits of the pair. Hermia Is likely to be a factor in the Suburban also. “It must be confessed that Willie Shields sprung a surprise In having this horse ready early, for ‘Hermis last negr his real form until he reached Sara- It is very probable that Her- mis jwould have been much closer up fa the Brooklyn if Shaw, had not given im that disconcerting Ittle bump at the head of the stretch. Hermis ts a. horse easily discouraged. Out in front tin-canning, he can come pretty near running any horse off ‘his feet, and even if he aid not win the Brooklyn, he took the starch out of Irish Lad. Sheepshead 1s probably the most pop- ular course on the olrcult, for the rea- son that. the course in ftself is. most attractive, and the racing there spring and fall Is at the periods when all horses are at their best and ready to put forth theolr best efforts. It will year was not not be surprising df on Suburban Day there are 100,000 people gathered to witness the great event. These are stupendous days in racing, and plmost anything may be expected in the way of attendance, 5 CARONER EASILY HAD RYAN OWN ‘(Special to The Evening World.) Jim Savage, Bert Griswold and Joe Sullivan, well-known Chicago sports, interested in English, yesterday raised among them- velves a fund of $2,000 to bet on their ; protege against the Milwaukee man. / Tom Andrews, who is looking after Neary's interest’ in this match, was no- tifled by long-distance telephone of the offer to bet, and replied that, although Neary never bets on himself, he pill bring that amount down on Saturday to cover the English money at evens. As this Is satisfactory to the Chicago man, ‘he lightweights will in all prot ity ttle for big side money, a TWO FINISH BOUTS. FOUGHT IN CITY Two rattling good fights, which ter- minated in knockouts, were held last night in the very heart of the city. WEIGHT, IRISH ATHLETE ———— oo Tf one may judge by past performances, as horsemen do {n picking race winners, Thomas F. Kiely, the Irish all-round atLlete, stands a good chance of winning the all-round competition of the world at the Olympic games of the Worlds Fair at St. Louis July 4, Kiely, who arrived here from reland Thursday, made the trip with one purpose in view, that of bringing the title home with him. In appearance Kiely is the {deal athlete. He !s tall and rather slender, bullt much on the same Hines as Bok Fitzsimmons, although not so broad across the shoulders as the lanky pueilist. \ Seeing Kiely in athletic costume one wonders where he gets the strength to throw the sixteen-potind hammer 161 feet 11 inches, or to send “the fifty-six” with one hand 88 feet 11 inches, which, by the way, is the world’s record. Below the watst Klely is the sprinter out and out. His legs are long and thin, with little or no calves, and his foot is unusually small. He Is a Fast Sprinter. Kiely can negotiate “the 100” In 101-5 seconds, and go over the 120- yard high hurdies in 16 seconds. He has also a creditable mark for the half-mile walk. The Irish all-round championships have always been easy for Kiely, so easy, in fact, that they were abolished because there were no competitors to face the Irish Glant. Kiely will try himself out to-morrow afternoon at the games of the Kickham A. C. at Celtic Park. He will compete in the weight events and probably the hurdle, This will be Kiely's first and last appearance in this country until he competes in St. Louis July 4. After to-morrow he wili go into training for the World's Fair games. Has Won 1,600 Prizes. Kiely has a great record, He holds eighty championships, has won 1,500 prizes, and is the creator of forty records. He comes from Ballyneal, near Carrick-on-Suir, Tipperary.
