’ BOWDIES WN RIOT ONL" TRAIN Members of Gang in Quarrel In- jure Several Passengers, Beat the Guards and Defy the » Police Reserves. MEN AND WOMEN CRAWL UNDER SEATS FOR SAFETY. Roughs Resist Arrest and All Except Seven Fight Their Way to Freedom—Angry Crowd Attempts to Attack Prisoners. Seven rowdies, sald to he members of & Fang, who took possession of en East New York (Brooklyn) elevated train, were arraigned in Ralph Avenue Pollce Court to-day, they having been beaten the guards and defied the police eserves of the Ralph Avenue Station. ‘There were several passengers on the train when {t waz boarded by the gang in East New York early to-day. "They engaged in fights among themselves, frightening several of the women pas- Sengers so that they screamed for help. This seemed to please the disturbers, ‘Then they began attacking the men and even the women were not safe from thelr abuse and blows. Many of them were forced to crawl under seats to escape injury trom flying missiles and fists. e ‘ ‘Train guards came to the assistance of the passengers, but they were quick- ly overcome by the rowdles and were roughly handled, ‘The train whistled loudly for the po- lice, Bluecoats from the Gates avenue tation boarded the train and were quickly attacked by the roughs. Then the police from the Hamburg and Ralph . avenue stations were called. The re- werves from the Ralph avenue station joined tho police from the Hamburg avenue line, and when the train drow up at the Gates avenue elevated station the police sprang aboard. So bold and determined were the roughs that they did not cease fighting even when they saw the large body of police, with drawn pistols and clubs descending upon them. ‘They fought with the fury of madness, With tho exception of seven all of them beat pack the police, Jumped from, the train and escaped. As the seven prisoners were led from the elevated station to patrol wagons there came a determined effort on the part of a hundred or more persons, who had been subjected to blows and Insults from the gang, to do them vio- lence, ‘The crowd pressed forward and it was with difficulty that the. pollce saved the prisoners from the mob's anger, eee 4 The Old-Yashion Way.
