He thought trom its poaftion that it was lenving, When he made his discovery he put on the brakes: and stopped his own train. No sooner had he come to a stop than James J. Kerrigan, conductor of the first train, rang the signal bell three times. This was an order to his motorman to back up. The motorman backed up with considerable vigor. Before Gordon could reverse his current and back his train out of the way the forward train crashed into him. None of the guards nor the conductor had leaned out to look back and ascertain it there was a train behind. STRUCK WITH GREAT FORCE. The crash demolished the rear platform of the last car of the first train and the front platform of the motor car of the second train, broke nearly all the windows and ventilating lights in both trains, threw standing pes- sengers to the floor, and showered all passengers with broken glass, The crash was heard for blocks. With one accord the passengers rushed for safety ouftside the cars. Women and children were thrown down and crushed. Men leaped from windows and helped women out, Many climbed across the platform on the downtown side and narrowly escaped being run over by trains, One man jumped to the street right in front of a trolley car, fell down and rolled out of the way, escaping by a hair's breadth, The motorman’ of the second train was apprehended ‘but not placed under arrest, The other motorman could not be found when the Police got after him, nor could the conductor, Kerrigan, BROOKLYNS BEAT. .
