“being finished almost ALUMINUN CARS FOR THE SUBWAY ‘The-interborough Company Has Ordered Two Hundred of } Them, and’ They Will Be } Ready When Traffic Begins. ‘GREAT CELEBRATION IS \. TO MARK THE OPENING. Subway-Is-Expected to Be Com- pleted by September, and the City Administration Will Arrange for a Holiday. General Manager ©. P. Bryan, of the Mnterborough Rapid Transit Company, Jo-day told an Evening World reporter \oat unfess the management encoun- tered serious and unexpected trouble the subway would surely be opened to the public in September, with both local and express trains running on Yehedule from the City Hall to One Mundred and Forty-fifth street. “There 1s no reason for any further Gelny, judging from the present indl- cations,” said Mr. Bryan. “The rails re practically down and the cars aro here, while the stations are far enough advanced so that they can be com- pleted by September. “It has been decided,” continued Mr. Bryan, “to use the two hundred steel cars for the motor cars, These cars ‘will be unlike any ever put into trans- portation service, Their interlors are entirely with aluminum. ‘The roof deck, the panelling nd belt rail under the windows are aluminum. They Are Non-Combustible. The American Car and Foundry Company 1s building these steel cars at Berwick, Pa. They are absolutely non-combustible, and will be a ‘great novelty, Iam sure. We shall put five of these cars tn each eight-car train nd threo in each five-car train, the former being the size of the express train and the latter of the local train. “Five hundred copper-sided cars such @s ore running of the Second avenue “Li have arrived, and nearly all have Deen broken in. The gate levers on these cars are being changed so that ‘tne coors can be opened with the ease of the “L’* gates. The cars each seat fifty-two persons. “The laying of the contact rafl and the bonding of the track rail has prac- tically been completed. The Union Switch and Signal Companyt reports that the installation of the block signal tow- ers with the apparatus for throwing the signals and switches by compressed air will bo shape not later than Au- gust.” Preparation of the train schedules has been left in the hands of General Supt. Frank Hedley. “We will begin to organize our oper- ating force for thé subway within two montis,” said Mr. Hedley. ‘The un- ion.’ The nety-sixth ¥ former branches off at street and goes out Lenox avenue, “The local trains will be run one mtn- ‘ute apart, while the express trains pass every two minutes. We shall run the jubway express trains a little earlier as well us a little later than the ex- ress trains on the "L.” They will also at the /fast trains on the elevated structure by from two to four minutes. It ts anticivated that both divisions as far es One Hundred and Forty-fifth ‘Otreet can, be opened in September.” ‘Already Tammany Hall, through’ the medium of Mayor McClelian, has made overtures to the management for the hol of a monster civic demonstra- tion when the first regular train passes up the subway, and assurances have been given that the arrangements can ely be made for a September open- ing. ‘It is intended to mark the opening by declaring a public holiday, with ‘speechmaking, music and general open- air rejoicing.
