i re reste a hie lene 4 ty t 4 | a — + MENARE SILENT J Telegraph Company's Officials Decline to Talk About Hart- nership Which Goddard Says Exists with Pool-Rooms. | CAPTAIN SHOWS COMPANY’S GAMBLING CONNECTION. | Aided by City Ciub, He Rigs a | Pool-Room, Having Wires | Run Down Chimney to Re- | ceive Race Returns. | AN of the high oMfciats of the We em Union Telegraph Company side stepped to-day when asked for an ex pression of opinion on the report of Capt. Norton Goddard that a practical] partnership exists between the Western Union and the poo!- m-keepers over the country. Reporters hankering | for information were referred to Sup! | W, J. Dealey, who gave out the follow ing unsigned statement at noon: “If any one wants reports of stocks grain, cotton, @ baseball game, a bill jard match, a cheas tournaynent, a bicy- cle race, a horse race or a sermon there fs no reason why they should not have it any more than they shouldn't have a gas moter or any other appurtepance in thelr hous» tf they want tt. “The majority of messages fled are] not in plain language; in other words they are in code ar cipher, and the tele-| fraph company has nothing to do with| such messages or their conteuts further than to transmit them." As a result of Capt. Goddard's report | each member of the Board of Directors | of the Western Union will receive to-day a letter from the Secretary of the City Club calling attention to the relations existing between the telegraph company and the pool-room men, According to Capt. Goddard, the two men who were sent first to make ar- Frangements with the telegraph company had considerable difficulty In finding the proper person, After seeing two super- intondents they were dntroduced to Mr. Mitchell, who, in turn, introduced them | § | to a Mr. Dealy. Took Aqueduct and Memphin, One of the men, known as Burke, sald he wished to open a pool-room at No. 8 Madison avenue. Dealy informed him that he could have a wire put 4n for $25 a day for the Aqueduct track and $ a day extra for every other| track. It was agreed to tal wire for) the Aqueduct track and one for Mem- phis, the price being $9. Dealy told the men he could not give them a written contract, as that would probably cause trouble. A few days later another man, who posed as Burke's backer in the poolroom, ‘visited the Western Union offices and saw both Mitchell and Dealy. He an- nounced that he was new to the business and wanted to know if the company could furnish an operator who knew how to square the authorities. Mitchell, who was in the room, ordered Dealy to go and what operators they had on hand. On Dealy's retura he aaid he couldn't tell what operators *| Would be available on April 15, the dute set for the opening of the pool-room Mitchell then said to the representative of the City Club: Wires Down Chimney. “Well, anyway, wo will give vou u | man who has had a large experience in pool-rooms and who knows the ropes and who knows enough to climb out of the window when trouble comes.” Arrangetnenta for wiring the house Were completed, and the Western Union employees actually put the wires into the house, dropping them down the} chimney, so they would not be con- spicuous, Tt was also agreed that the $30 a day was to be turned over to tho operator | ‘each day and that he was to be given $10 a day as wages in addition. Capt. Goddard figured that there ed no less than tliree hundred pool- yng in this city, and that on a bavio | fM pf $80 each the Western Union's income | from this source alone amounted to | 19.000 a day tn this cl:y | It was agreed at the meeting of tho iy Club that a full repo-t of the affair | Yhould be sent to each membar of the Board of Directors of the telegaph comn-|f Pany.
