‘3 r - GIANTS IN A OMY TH MAN FROM NEW YORK Bookmaker J. B. Coogan meee cas Causes .. Arreat of Edward S. Armstrong in Philadelphia on Charge that Prisoner Hired Thugs to Hold Him®Up. (Special to The Evening World.) PHILADELPHIA, April 19,—J. B. Coogan McKee, of New York, a Jookimaker at the Aqueduct Race Track, for two hours to-day stood on the witness stand at the Central police station, He told a thrilling story of having been inveigled to the produce com. mission house of Edward S. Armstrong, No, 133 Spruce street, Philadel. phia, and there bound and gagged, threatened with death and robbed of $1,289 in cash, a diamond scarf-pin, a watch and chain and other jewelry valued at $600. MADE A CHARGE OF THEFT. MeKee appenred to present a chesge of theft with most sensatonal features against Armstrong, at whose direction, he said, the robbery was perpetrated, Acoording to McKee, who is over six feet tall and of athletic build, he and Armstrong entered upon a deal whereby each was to contribute $3,000 to a fund to be used for the purpose of playing faro by a system which McKee originated. Both men sat down to the game in a New York gambling-house. The system failed and the $6,000 was lost in less than three hours. “ McKee's contention is that Armstrong, in order to make good his owu loss, invited him to this city for the purpose of robbing him, The alleged robbery, he says, was committed on the night of April 6. For the purpose . of placing him ina defenseless consitiin, McKee says, Armstrong employed three men to bind and gag him. ARMSTRONG HEID FOR TRIAL. After McKee had told the story of ‘the hold- up, Magistrate Kochersper- ger committed Armstrong for trial on a robbery charge, Armstrong was arrested this morning by Detective Frani@ Gallagher on &@ warrant sworn out by McKee a few days ago. Lawyer Hdmunds. The prosecution was conducted Dallam. -. PETERSBURG, April 19.—Vice-Admiral Skrydloff arrived here to- day on his way to the Far East, where he will take command of the Russian fleet at Port Arthur. The Admiral was accorded an enthusiastic reception by the people who thronged the streets. i The vast Znamienskala Square, opposite the Nicholas Railroad Station, was black with people, and the police guarding the platiorm were unable to cope with the crowds, who broke through the cordon and rushed toward the train. ‘There were repeated outbreaks of enthusiastic cheers as the Admiral left the car, and from the bareheaded throng a peasant stepped out and pre- sented Skrydlofi wih a copy of a picture entitled "The Holy Virgin of Joy to the Affilcted,'which is reputed to have miraculous power. The peasart algo presented theAdmiral with consecrated bread, telling Skrydloff that he sainted him in the name of the masses of the Russian people, all of whose | hopes depended on him as the hero of the Russo-Turkish war.
