(O,000 MEN KOW VOLVED Negotiations for Settlement of the Labor Troubles in Build- ing Trades Have Ended, and Bitter Struggle*Is On. SECOND MONTH OF FIGHT BEGINS TO-DAY. Twenty-six Conferences Have Been Held—Trouble Began with an Increase in the Hours | of Laborers. Negotiations for peace in the building trades war have ended, To-day, which marks the opening of the second month in the fight, precipitated by the mason builders, finds 6,000 bricklayers walking the streets, not a break in their ranks. ‘They are, not without company, these Bricklayers. Besides the 6,000 Inborers in whose behalf building is tied up, ‘there are 4,000 fronworkers and 7,000 car- penters and 6,00 plasterers, and—but why go further down the lst of af- fected trades? Enough that 100,000 workingmen, the entire complement of the industry, are now indirectly in- volved Here 1s the cause? r Mason Bullders’ Association. , Secretary's Office, Townsend Bullding, New York, March 2, 1906. Dear Sir: At a special meeting of the Mason Bullders’ Association on ‘Tuesday, | March 1, 1904, the following resolution was mnanimously adopted: “Resolved, That the maximum wage for laborers shall be thirty-five (35) cents per] hour from 7 A. M. to 6 P. for six days) fm the week, All other time shall be cot gidered overtime and shall be paid for at ‘the rate of time and a half, except where men are employed specially for night and Sunday work, when thoy shall work eight | hours for ingle time, and for all time over) eight hours they shall be paid at the rate of time and a half; this resolution to take ef- fect on Friday morning, March 4, 1904" Yours respectfully, Gignea) W. H. FOSTER, Secretary. Bricklayers Then Quit Work. What followed can be told in few words. ‘ The laborer quit work. ‘The bricklayer refused to work with Bubstituted Inborers. ‘Then the mason bullder climbed a treg, Ho admitted that the objection- able order was a clear violation of his pledge to leave the unskilled laborers undisturbed for a year as to wage and hours. The bricklayers were asked to go back to work, and the laborers too. “Go back,” pleaded the bosses, “and let us arbitrate.” ‘What was March 10. Since then twenty-six conferences haye been held without result. The careful wire-pull- Ing of the Civic Federation forces ac- tomplished nothing but to unearth Capt. F, Norton Goddard in the light of a defender for the labor side of the question. GAFFNEY DINES NOTABLES.
