HOTEL ST. DENS GESTS NPA Smoke from Small Fire in Base- \ ment of Broadway .Hostelry Arouses Patrons and Women Climb Out on Fire-Escapes. A alight fire in the basement of the Hotel St. Denis, at Broadway and Eleventh streot, caused a panic among ‘the 800 guests of that hostelry to-day. The fire was caused by an overflow of the automatic oller in the boiler room under the sidewalk on the kiev- enth street side. The oil flowed down ‘under the boilers until met a pile of hot ashes, whén It began to smoke and finally burst into flames. John Coman, watchman at the Me- Creery Building, across the street, and Patrolman Byrnes, of the Mercer street station, were talking together on the sidewalk and saw the smoke. They no- tiled Night Clera Gregg and the latter aroused the hotel hands and started for the basement The guosts were aroused and several of them, principally women, climbed the firé escapes. ‘They werg no- Ufied that there was no danger. Chief Croker and Battalion Chief Shea arrived immediately after the first alarm and under their direction the fire was quickly extinguished. RR PEN A fire in the basement of the Hoffman Aouse early to-day roused the sleeping guests, and considerable excitement pre- vailed until 11 was known that Uttle danger existed. A policeman passing the store of the Fletschmann Floral Company, on the first floor of the hotel at the corner of ‘Twenty-fifth street and Broadway, saw the room filled with smoke, and turned in an alarm. ‘The smoke soon filled the north side of the hotel bullding, and guests who aid not wait to telephone from their rooms ran to the office In slight attire to ascertain the cause. Bmployees of the hotel ran through the building from door to door and as- gured the gueste there was no danger. There was no panic, By the time the Fire Department ar- rived the flames were breaking through the floor of the flower store. Several streams of water soon had the flames extinguished before they had done more than $2,000 damnge.
