Although the painting work on the Subway has hardly begun and the paint contractors declare dt cannot be com- pleted until Inte In the fall, poxstbly Dec. 1. the subway, aceording to = statement given out at August Bel- mo oflice to-day, will be in full operation between the first and last day of June. This statement is made on tho asia that there will be no more strike: on the big nower-house building at Fif- ty-ninth street and Eleventh avanu and barring vnlooked-for accidents. Unt! to-day the paint contractors have sald that !t would be impossible to paint the ateel supports and girders in the Subway while the cars were running. The sides of the tunnel can be sprayed, but the supports and girders have to be hand painted and men would be in constant danger working on them 1f cars were allowed to pass in elther direction. 4 This, however, according to the state- ment from Mr. Belmont, will be easily remedied. While the painting is in progress the express trains will be stopped at midnight and the local trains run on the express tracks from mid- night until 6 A.
