“NORTH AER 5 TUNNELLED” That Is the Cry Shouted Through the Tube Which Is Almost Against the Bank on the New York Side. t MEN FROM EITHER SHORE MEET UNDER THE WATER. Great Bulkhead Wall Is All That Now Stands in the Way of Communication Between the Cities. Ten men started from Henderson and Provost streets, Jersey City, to-day, went down into the tunnel of the New York and New Jersey Railroad Company and walked under the North River. At the same Ume a gang of men went down into the mouth of the tunnel at ® shaft located at the foot of Morton Street and walked through the tube un- til their progress was stopped by a Breat bulkhead wali, ali that separated them from the wotkers who came In the opposite direction. One of the workmen beat on the wall with his hammer. Instantly there came a beating sound from the other side and the cry was sounded through the tube: “North iver ts tunnelied,”’ ‘The tube from the New Jersey side ‘of the river ts almost against the New Yor bank. When the men entered the tube from the New Jersey side a great door closed with a bang behind them and they were shut off from light ex- cept that furnished by the lanterns they carried. ‘There came a strong current of air, made by the compressed air machine, which rvared by them like ® great storm, bursting through the airtight tube on the New York side of the river and sending the water four fect in the alr. It rose and fell for a radius of ten feet llke a great fountain, and boiled and foamed as the alr pressed Its way through from the tube opening to the surface. This alr keeps the water from the end of the tube which rests against the bulkhead and the New York end of the tube, Should this alr cease to flow for one instant, water would rush into the tube and workmen on the in- Bide would perish. The bulkhead ts a relic of the old tunnel begun in 1874, which was aban- doned when twenty-three men lost their lives. It was bullt with the {dea of keeping water out of the tube whicn had been built, it being thought then that engineering would so improve in the futuré as to make tho bullding of the abandoned tunnel pi sstble. A second tube will be forced under the river at once, and it Is belleved Ly ‘William G, McAdoo, President of the company, and General Manager Frve and the engineers in their employ that the second tube can be laid in much less time than the firat. A single trol- ley track will be Int@ through each tube, but until the second tube Is comn- plete it 1s said that no attempt will be made to run the ca ‘The New York terminus of the tunnel ee "JAMES MoGREERY & CO White Dress Goods. 2d Floor.
