me I > MORNING RUSH | FAS TERRORS, TO The Great Crowds That Daily Pour Over to New York Make an Inferno of the Brooklyn) End of the Bridge. CONDITIONS AS BAD AS NIGHT RUSH FOR HOME. Outrageous Scenes Enacted in the Scramble to Get to Work —A Good Suggestion for Commissioner McAdoo. By the judicious placing of a few po- Ucemen tn uniform on the elevated str- tons built over the bridge platforins at the Brooklyn end of the bridge, and in the long aisle leading from the staticn of the Kings County elevated road, the Gisgraceful crowding and pushing and Jostling which occurs every morning at the Brooklyn end of the bridge can in a great degree be avoided. At present no police are stationed on the several platforms leading to the bridge station, and at times most dis- graceful scenes are witnessed on the upper platforms upon which the pas- rengers alight from the incoming ele- vated trains, What is char of one platform ts charact On the single bridge which the passengers from all the ele- vated trains descend the only crowd- ing occurs when the trains are being boarded, and this {s comparatively in- as compared to the condi- h exist immedately after the passengers alight from the elevated trains overhead. For instance, when a train load of passengers leave the train at the Sands street elevated station—a large, commo- dious and unobstructed area—a rush is made for two narrow entrances equipped with swinging doors which time and! time again have been carried off their! hinges by the great pressure of the surging crowd at that point, The crowd is brought to an abrupt halt at the en- trances by the sudden choking up ot | the narrow passageway leading to the narrower entrance to the steps descend ing to the bridge platform, Like as Through a Funne}. The entrance to the steps is partly surrounded by an iron railing which is curved in a manner that makes it wider at its exit end than the entrance end. | Under ordinary conditions it is possible only for two or three persons to walk through abreast. so narrow is {t When the assault by the morning crowd takes place six and seven persons are forced through the opening, struggling 8 to k their feet as each ding baten’ o 8 made by the erowd| e platarm below iM a of “yassenge's has been dumped upon the elevated tion and this ¢ the rear of the the narrow entranc At these times, and they occur # cessively two hours daily during morning rush, the crowding is tc Btron, men are a powerless to resis: sure behind and on a struggling througn along to’ by the m ay be st i toward the narrow entrance ried off his feet he ts pushe rs, are force narr Wgunce to the of te precipitous steps of the # leading to the bridge platform b As an illustration of the den the crowd during these out scrambles, it {s impossible for one to see the edge of the steps as they are approached and one cannot tell nt just what moment to step down upon th first step, until he finds nothing b neath his feet. Then he knows that he has begun the descent, From that m ment the crowding ceases and the r of the journey is made in comparat comfort. Entrances Are Clogged, In the absence of upper platforms during the morning rush hours the crowd, left to its own | resources, rushes into the smallest con- ceivable space with the result that the entrances are clog nd progress. in slow, not to speak of the danger which may occur at any moment among a great struggling throng, It is suggested that the placing of icemen on the gradually approach the curved railing entrances the awful crowding will he Prevented agd better progress effected he elevated platforms are iar and odious and capable of affording amplé room Ao several trainloads passengers.
