The horse had been‘ Ill for only two days, but he was ten years old and a life of strenuous campaigning had weakened his powers of resistance against the heavy cold and complication of other ailments that carried him off. ’ Mr. Scannell pald $2,500 for The Ab- bot at a sale in Madison Square Gar- den on Nov. 3, 1900. ‘This was the highest price that had ever been paid for @ trotting gelding at that time, and Whe Abbot was then the fastest gelding on the trotting turf. But faster horses have made his old record appear slow, and E, EB, Smathers topped the pur- chase price of The Abbot by 60 (per cent. when he paid $40,000 for Major Delmar at the Empire City track last fall. At the time of the sale Major Delmar had & record of 2.00 1-4. ‘ Consistent as a Campaig! The Abbot was a great horse, al- though records stand to the credit of younger horses that are under his by seconds, But he made his record of 2.08 1-# without the ald of a wind shield and long before he was hailed as the king of the turf by virtue of a record- breaking performance he had been a consistent campatgner. Up to the time he took the lead among trotting horses he had made his records in races ‘he Abbot was foaled in 1893 at C. J. Hamltn's Village Farm, East Aurora, N.Y. His sire was Chimes, by Elec- tloneer, out of Beautiful Bells, and b! dam was Nettle King, 2201-4, by Mam- brino King, He was a promising colt from the siart, and early attracted the attention of Ed Geers, the veteran trainer and driver, who was manager of the racing department at Village Farm. When The Abbot was three years old he was taken out on the circuit and stamped himself as a performer of the first-class, Against a field of old and seasoned campaigners at Fort Wayne he trotted to victory in elght heats in last A race, stepping the two heats fach in 2.11, No three- old trotting horse had ever done any thing like this before and It is a regord that stands to the creJit of The Abbot to this day. Record as a Trotter, In 1897 The Abbot established a mark of 2.111-2. In 1898 he lowered his record To 2.08, atid in 1889 put it down to 2.06 1-4, Mr. Hamuin and Mr. Geers decided that they had a world beater and in 1900 set out with The Abbot to lower the trot- Ung record which had stood to the credit of Alix, 2.03 3-4, for six years, he feat was petformed ut Terre Haute, Ind., on Sept. %, 1900. Two bids were made. Ed H. ‘Tipton Did $26,000. “Mr. Scannell raised the bid $500, “He sald that he had bought the horse as a. business investment and would match him against any trotter in the world, Beaten Badly by Creaceus, fforts were made by various trotting associations to arrange « sweepstakes for ‘The Abbot.
