54 ‘ ? o ’, se eee = - Thid Battle in the War Going On in New York Percival Punk Describes the Horrors of an Assault on Brooklyn Brigge by the Great Army That Invades Brooklyn. BY PERCIVAL, PUNK, “fe Boy Wonder, Author of ‘‘The Love Letters of a Sheep Herder.’’ ALBANY, N. Y., Feb. 19 (On board the Twentieth Century Limited), to the wilds, mo to the grizzly bear country, where I can wrestle with untamed beasts for a rest. I was a spectator and actor in the Assault Upon the Brooklyn Bridge Inst night, and row 1 seek a spot remote from clvilization, where I can get the soreness out of myself. Qn previous occasions I had witnessed the assault from a safe position on tho upper platform, protected trom the frenzied strugglers below by a stout railing. But, knowing that you desired a lifelike report of the cruel and bloodthirsty action that is waged daily at the junction of the Bridge and Park Row, I determined to get Into the thick of it. This determination almost led to my giving 1 death- pas) senda I am still talking to myself, und wondering how I escaped on my ‘That I might better be able to observe the assault and experience the feelings of @ participant therein I got a job in an office in Nassau street, and, thus di Sulsed, succeeded in enrolling myself in the Arcade Volunteers. This is one division of the vast army that sweeps up Park Row every evening and, deploying sharply to the right, makes the charge of the Light Brigade look like a man with Iccomotor ataxia taking a walk through a cemetery. Iwas fortunate in:making the acquaintance of a young man who has been a member of the Nassau Street Division of the Army of Invasion ever since he -Was an office boy. Ho is over six feet tall, and so developed muscularly that to run’ your hand over him fs like caressing a bagful of doorknobs. It is his proud boast that within a year ne has put three policemen out of business, torn a woman's ear off, and caved in the ribs of five old men. These he regards as the major casualties to his credit. As for minor injurles inflicted by him, he has kept no count. Assault Made With Cunning. From him I learned that tho nightly assault upon the Brooklyn Bridge is made with a great deal of cunning. Jt 4s directetl by that master-hand at the treation of discord, General Necessity. In order that his soldiers may be the more determined ffi action General Necessity sends them into action hungry, and hae taught them to keep uppermost in thelr minds the vision of smokin upon Brooklyn dinner tables, That hundreds are unable to eat after th successfully accomplished the assault but serves to whet their desire to get over some day with person and appetite unimpaired and comfortable on a street car it. The ongagemeut begins each evening about 4.30 o'clock, when the Wall Street skirmishers move up from the Financtal District and begin to pepper the defend- ing forces. At that hour the guardians of the Bridge aro girded up for a stiff ‘pattle, and the shrieks of the wounded are the exception rather than the rule. ‘When word camo for the detachment of which I was a temporary member to go to the front I fell in line with the young man with the hone-breaking rec- ord spoken of above. As we gained the narrow Nassau street road we collided wih the Ann Street Annihilators and the Beekman Street Busters. I was swept from my feet and daslied against a sporting-goods store window, but my marehing partner rescued me and put me in the line of march. ‘We stopped at the umbrella for refreshments and then fought our way into the Light Infantry from Liberty street. The members of this command are clerks in banks and brokerage offices and easy to run over, so that by the time we had reached the Pulitzer Building we had left most of them behind us. ‘We wero held up for a moment at the South wagon road by the outer guard of the defense—two policemen who regulate the cavalry and automobile ad- vance, Released from this position, we swept across to the Plaga and in a moment were in the thick of the fight. I had been told by my guide and companton in arms that our objective point ‘was @ Myrtle avenue car. High above the heads of the struggling mob I could bee signs denoting the different positions of attack, and standing out against them was the one toward which we were to steer, Made a Great Mistake. ‘At the very outset of the charge I made a fatal mistake, Close beside me ‘were three Amazons. I stopped aside to allow them to get ahead of me, where- ‘upon a company of females carrying lunch-boxes and books charged upon me from the rear, and when I came to I was being dragged by my big fellow-sol- dier from @ recumbent position against a pillar at the north side of the bridge. “T gave one of the dames the elbow in the face,” he said breathl ne gained three yards dragging you along. Stand pat after this. Don't give an 4nch for anybody.” I was beginning to-get into the spirit of the’ thing, “The blood of my bar? Darian ancestors boiled within me. With a whoop of joy I sprang at the ar- ray: of packs presented ito, my view, and with hands, elbows, feet and knees bored a passage through. But I had foes worthy of my strength. They were in front of me, behind me, on every side of me. I got a soak on the right ear that made me see stars and a jab in the stomach tpat made mo want to le down and go to sleep. With Dlesing eyes and set lips I fought my way, at last gaining a position alongside 2he Myrtle avenue car-track and in the front row of the advance. A car came creeping slowly toward me, Men and women sprang out of the Uno and leaped upon ft with the agility of monkeys. As it swept by me a large foot inserted itself in my neck and I was hurled from my feet and carried halt ‘way around the loop by the cruel crowd surrounding me. I tried to retreat. Retreat was impossible. Buffeted, jammed, stepped on, boosted, pulled, clear of maelstrom and found myself standing alone in the roadway. Far out to the eastward I could see the glimmering lghts on the bridga A few feet away the ‘battle surged, and to my ears came the sound of hoarse cries, Running like a deer, I went far out over the river and leaped for safe landing in the funnel of © Fall River boat and sliding down into the fur- nace, from which I crawled some time later, to the undieguised astonishment of the firemen. They put me ashore at Hell Gate and from there I made my way to tho Grand Central Station, where I caught the fastest train out of New York. ‘Try as I cart cannot get the sound of the Assault on the Brooklyn Bridge out o my ears northe sight of it out of my eyes nor the pain of it out of my bones.
