Apartments Were Richly Fur- nished and Bank Books Were Found in His Rooms—Neigh- bors Call It Case of Suicide. ‘With unseeing eyes looking at a plc- ture of Kitchener of Khartoum, who had been his {dol and whom he resem- bled very much in face and build, Nels Peter Hansen, a man of mystery, was found smothered to death by gas in his beautifully furnished apartments at No. b8 West One Hundred and Fifth street, where he had lived alone for fourteen months. The mystery which alway: tached {tself to the man and his move- ments has deepened with his death, and to-day the neighborhood ts on the qui vive, sure that some strange story of Dansen will unfold itself, 'To the few people with whom Hansen had talked he had told of having been } miner in the Klondike. He always wd plenty of money, and tho police have heard that he once was heard to}, Femark that he was worth $20,000. Among his effects they have found a vings bank book showing an account of $1,600, There are other pass books, but the police have not dared to open them. Hansen's only business was @ Jaundry at No, 206) Lexington avenue, which he rented from Thomas G. McClatchey, a saloon-keeper, in a building adjoining, Dut so far as any one knows he never had any patrons nor did he ever try to get any. There is no machinery, in the place and during the seven months he pald rent for it it was open only a few days and only one employee was ever seen there. ‘This “laundry” is as much of a mys- tery to the neighborhood as the man Rimeelf wus. McClatchey says that all he knows about Hansen was that he paid the rent when it was due and took Q receipt for the money. No one can say that Hansen did or id not commit suicide. He was in bed, and it would appear that he died while leep. He was a great lover of fresh air, and the fact that his window was tightly closed i€ads people in the house to believe that his death may not have been accidental. It was his habit to always sleep with the door and window of his room open. The door, too, was found closed. The furnishings of the apartment were in confusion. Hansen had been missed by James Cavanaugh, the janttor of the apart- ments, since Wednesday last, and the odor of gas coming from his quarters fei the janitor to cali the police and break in, A Qoctor was summoned from the Harlem Hospital, and he sald uh that man had been dead at least fo hours. On the bureau in the room of death lay $2, a costly gold watch and peveral valuadle diamond pins, while on his hands were (rings of brilllants of high pr Photographs of renowned works of ant hung on all the walls, and In every room was a likeness of Lord Kitchener. Strewn around were various works of art, ancient pottery, camdle- evicks and silverware, and everywhere | | mwas evidence of artistic taste and re-||i were on every | | finement. Good books hand and the closet: presses were Alled with ng. ‘The janttor says that Hansen once told him that he was a Dane and that this mother was living in Denmark, He clothes- is and ‘expensive cloth- spoke also of a brother in California, ihansen wai about forty yeans oll.
