*'a Manhatian man {s wanted for the ‘COL. DVER IN LEAD FR POLICE HED {John J. Delaney, Gen. McCoskry Butt and Col. David Austen Also Are Being Considered for the Position. ‘TO REHABILITATE TAMMANY. with Former Administrations. HOT SPRINGS, Va., Nov. 18—Four names, according to a report here, are |wecefving serious consideration for the |Police Commissionership of Greater 'New York. One is Col. George R. Dyer, who, ac- cording to a rumor which reached here from New York, has within the ast two ‘days been offered the position, and has indicated his acceptance, The others are Joh: J. Delaney, who, ‘by common consent, has been slated for appointment as Corporation Counsel; Brig.-Gen. MoCoskry Butt and Col. David B. Austen, of the Thirteenth Rogiment, Brooklyn. These names have all been presented to Mr. Murphy, and it {s known that he ‘has them under consideration. Other names also have been suggested, but most of them have been dismiesel with ecant attention. Gen. Butt, who 1s now in Paris, was elected a member of the Tammany So- clety at the November meeting, and friends have urged his fitness for the position, declaring that he is an exper- fenced and capable military man and a Democrat. J. Sergeant Cram, a close ‘friend of Munphy, proposed him for membership, and {s his strongest backer or the Commissionership, Mr. Cram, who sajled Satyrday for Europe, is ex- pected to see Gen. Butt in Paris, Col. Austen has many strong friends and {s known to be an able military man, It is thought, however, that he has Uttle chance, owing to the fact that appointment and one who is in closer touch with the organization than he, , Talk of Col. Dyer wil not down and Mt is ienown that his backing has been growing in strength. v. is very favorably inclined toward tor jthe reason that last year, when Mr. \Mumphy had just taken hold of Tam- jmany “Hall and was looking for dig lmen to serve as ornamental delegates end was finding them hard to get, Col. Dyer willingly accepted and went to Garatoga with him and Col, McClellan. Two or three important Tammany men |who, dt ts said, have been summoned here are expected Wefore the end of stood’ to be ma \ 0 be wanted by Mr. Murphy on ‘the selection of a police commissioner. A New Tammany. Te has developed here that ne: {month “Charles If Murphy ts going so kepmpletely, reorganize the Tammany So- (slety, the Tammany General Committee gad the Democratic Club, ‘The annual meeting of the Democratic Club comes ‘Qrst, early in December, and it ts sala {that the entire Carroll’ and Freedman |faotion will be thrown out of the Board lot ors and; men more closely Mdentifed with Murphy put fa, The |mestings of the Tam: Soolety and of the Tammany General Committee will \gome @ ¢ew days later, when radicai ‘changes aro scheduled td take place. Mr. Murphy is now firmly in. the waddle, and ‘he feels so strongly in- (fenched in his position as a result of he election that he proposes to. sur- ‘ound himself only with men who are lous in his interest. Only Murphy in will be put on guard in all the or- (Egnlzations which nave an influence in aapping the destinies of Tammany Hall. ve members of the Democratic (Club's Board of Directons who, it is ex- ted, will be dropped are’ Andrew ‘reedman, J . John Fox, who has been wident for several terms, is expected 0 retire and give place to elther Cord feyer or Justice Morgan J. O'Brien. Slated as Sachems, jg Beveral Tammany sachems will be Aropped, according, to present plans, in- cluding Asa Bird Gardener and John J. Scannell, Several weighty names are on the slate to fill the places of these \retiring sachems, and Mr. Murphy |s (Planning to surprise his triends by the |high character of his selections. Bourke (Cockran and John D. Crimmins are two lof the names on the Ist. Mr. Murphy ‘hopes by this move to emphasize the return to the fold of such men as Cock- ran and Grimmins, and at the same timo to get their active co-operation, Mr, Crimmins 18 now in consultation with the Tammany slatemakers, and never ‘before has he been more closely interest jed in Tammany. His advice has been sought on many matters of importance. 4s known that {t has been asked re- \garding many of the most important ‘offices, Both Mr. Murphy and Col, ait \Clelian have asked for and receivea ad- ‘vice and counsel from him. This ts jequally true of Bourke Cockran, who in \pot only to be named as a sachem, but ls slated next year for a seat in Cont gress. ‘Other names on Mz, fraschem are John Tt Gbhys ist Fee son Ne Tet, Jae A is mentioned for ‘Grand Sachem to succe, OWillium F, Grell, wh hess lam ¥.
