; , CERMAN FICHT ONTIGER CROWS Thousands Join the Movement to.Put Up William F. Grell as an Independent Candidate for Sheriff. TAMMANY REGARDS IT AS A SERIOUS MENACE. More than Enough Names Are Already Signed to the Grell Petition, but He Wants to Make Strong Showing. The “German revolt’ against Tam- many took definite shape to-day when Willlam F, Grell, the independent can- didate for Sheriff of the German Democ- QM opened campaign headquarters in Terrace Garden and inavgurated an active canvass for election, The ex- Sheriff's boom was launched last night at a meeting of the United German Societies in Terrace Garden. The launching of the independent Ger- man movement has created consterna- tion at Tammany Hall, where it is regarded as a more serious menace to the success of the ticket than the Mc- Laughlin revolt in Brooklyn. Mr. Grell when seen to-day In his office at No..21 Desbrosses street, was tip to his ears in the work of getting his name on the ballot as an independent candidate. Persons representing ¢he hundred or more German societies of which Mr, Grell is a member poured in and out of the office exhibiting petitions to which they were obtaining signatures. “I must present my petition with at least 2,000 names by midnight to-mor- row night,” said Mr. Grell. “Now, 1 have far more names than that, but I want to make a great showing, and my friends will work for me without rese until dt is time to present the petition. Opposes Grout and Fornes, “I have not yet decided whether 1 will announce myself to the people on any partl¢ular platform or not. I will say, however, that I am for the open saloon on Sunday. Of course, the Sheriff could not create any such law, but he Js the right-hand man of the courts, I intend to vote for Mr. McClellan and work for the Democratic cause, though I will not siy Mat 1 am going to vote for Mr, Grout and Mr, Fornes.
