SLAIN BY. MISTAKE Ag THEORY OF THE POLICE Private Detective Had Questioned Chil- dren in the Neighborhood Where He Was Shadowing Woman, and Was Suspected of Different Motives. Sleuths Disregarded Warning to Keep Away from the Block—Police Say - “ti Custody Soon. _., The murder of Frederick Adrian Verduc, the private detective, last right. was due to a mistaken idea on the part of the maa who killed him he and his partner, Joseph Hansen, were trying to entice children from | ‘the block i in Fifty-tifth street between Eighth and Ninth avenues. The po- | Mice do.not believ2 that the man who killed Verdue intended to murder him, ‘but in fig excess of his rage he fractured the skull of ihe private detective several times. Thete‘is 4 strong clue to the ‘identity of the man who did the killing. | The suspect lives in the block, and one of his children had been approacheti | by Verdue and Hansen, who had been hanging around the neighborhood | several days shadowing a woman. A wrong construction appears to havé been placed upon the actions of the detectives by the people in the block. ‘FORMERLY APA YMASTER. Verdue, who was once a paymaster In the United States Navy, lved| with his -youug wife at No, 111 Montague street, Brooklyn. After leaving | the Navyohs engaged in newspaper work, securing naval information for ;Various hewspapers during the war with Spain. ‘Then he went with the ‘Holland Sub-Marine Boat Company and recently joined the forces of a local tive agency, He was a quiet, unassuming young fellow of excellent tation. ‘Some days ago Verdue and Hansen were assigned to shadow o woman who Alves in the Fifty-fifth street block near Ninth avenue, They Watched the house in the afternoons and evenings, awaiting the arrival of the woman so as to pick up her trail. It was not long before they at- ‘ ; Sa.4 attention of the children on the block because of their fur- le ing manner. de Thinking to make frieuds with the children, Verdue and Hansen gave _ them pennies. This was reported to the mothers, and then to the fathers and brothers. and in a short time the two men were objects of suspicion. Right before last they were waited on by a crowd of young men, who asked their business. They refused to give the desire@- information, and were Warned that unless they left the neighborhood they would be “done up.” VERDUE WARNED AWAY. When they went on duty last night Verdue stationed himself on the north side of the street in front of No, 351, while Hansen sat on a railing Just across. At No. 357 two men, named Totten and Fairchild, were sitting on the stoop. They saw a tall man in his shirt sleeves approach Verdue and apparently warn him away. Verdue refused to go, and an argument resulted, which led to blows, The man in his-shirt sleeves produced a club with, which he struck Verdue ‘over the head until the detectiv» fell to the sidewalk, At the same time a slight young man, greatly excited, jumped out of a doorway and assaulted Hansen, who ran to Ninth avenue. Han-:n went into Beckman’s grocery store, on the corner, and tele phoned to Police Headquarters that he had been assaulted by a gang of tourhs. As he finished telephoning the young man who had jumped on him down the block enterea the store and struck him in the face. Mr. Beckman drove the men to the sidewalk, and the assailant of Hansen ran away. Veraue was sent to Rooseveit Hospital and Hansen was arrested. Ver- ue died without recovering consciousness. Hansen was identified by a megro girl, who has a vivid imagination, as the man who assaulted Verdue @hd'was held. WIFE AT HIS BEDSIDE, * The young wife of Verdue was at his bedside when he died. She has not been married long and was completely prostrated. Verdue had not told de> thejnature of the work in which he was engaged, Acting Captain Handy took Hansen to the West Forty-seventh Street Court and ftom there he was.sent to the Coroner's offica, Hansen says that he can identify the assailant of Verdue ang an arrest is expected shortly, One 6f Hansen's eyes is closcd and he is badly battered about the face from the beating he received. Coroner Goldenkranz remanded Hansen back to the West Forty-seventh atreet station until Monday morning on the strength of an affidavit made by Mary Hamfiton,-a negro girl. She swore that she saw a man wearing “ght trousers and a black coat assault Verdue. Hansen wore a dark blue sult.. The tiie’ dill take no stock jn the Hamilton woman's identification.
