MURPHY MAY GET TEN-YEAR SENTENCE |: fhe Law Provides that as a j Maximum Penalty for the Man , Convicted of Stealing $12,- f 000 from Stone Cutters. PROSECUTIONS TO FOLLOW. Dietrict-Attorney Preparing to Pre- sent to Grand Jury Evidence Dis- closed at Trial to Show that Labor Leaders Have Been Extorting Money from Employers. Although Lawrence Murphy, ex- -@easurer of the Stone-Cutters’ Union, twas only convicted yesterday atter- moon, Judge Newberger, before whom Murphy was tried, has already recelved numerous letters suggesting what pen- alty he should tmpose upon him. Judge Newberger's morning mail to- Gay consisted mainly of letters bearing mpon the Murphy case. ‘It 48 wonderful,” the Judge remark- ed, “what a deep interest taken in the case. % recelyed letters during the prog ess of the trial from all over the country. The subject was @pparently a very interesting one.” Murphy was convicted of grand lar- ceny. The maximum sentence for this erime is ten years imprisonment in Ging Sing at hard labor. There ts no minimum under the Inteterminate sen- tence act, however, Judge Newburger ‘an impose a sentence from one day up ‘te the maximum of ten years. Under Whis act a prisoner can be paroled from State prison after serving a few months of the sontence. ‘The disclosures developed by John F. Molntyre, counsel for Murphy, may have @ great deal to do with the sentence !m- posed upon Murphy. Judge Newburger intends to make a very careful invest ation into all the circumstances con- nected with the case. For this purpose he allowed Mr. McIntyre great latitude throughout the trial. Murphy will be wentenced on Friday, The District-Attorney's office ts now @ngaged in preparing for the grand fury cases of estortion brought to light 4m the trial of Murphy.
