S ALL CAMBLNC “GAMES CLOSED AT LONG BRANCH ‘The Famous Pennsylvanta Club, John Daly’s and Other Places Where the Roulette Ball Was Wont to Spin Are Now Shut and Deserted. \PRIVATE POKER PARTIES , HAVE TAKEN THEIR PLACE. Gamblers Declare It Will Mean Ruin of the Resort, but Resi- dents Insist Greater Prosper- ity Has Followed the Suppres- sion.of Temples of Chance. (Special to The Brening World.) LONG BRANCH, July 21.—For one year, lacking a day, there has been no gambling in the big clubhouses in Long Branch and from ithe present appear- anoes the knell of the gamblers has been sounded. Long Branch has grown to de a@ solid, prosperous community mith @ population that ..ves here the year round. It is the judgment of the Permanent residents that gambling is not necessary to the success of the ce- sort and so the Dalys are anxious to well out, the bdeautiful Ocean Club Grounds @re overrun with weeds, the Aistoric Pennsylvania Club is barred and desolate and the other gambling palaces tthe abode of cobwebs and dust. What caused the downfall of Long Branch as the favorite place of resort of the Goddess of Chance is a subject of discussion in which the gamblers and the townspeople take opposite views. The residents hold that it Is due to the moral sense of the community, which, they believe, has achieved its full growth, The gamblers say that it is due to the fact that Davey Johnson came down from New York, put up a $78,000 club-house to the accompaniment of brass bands and created such a scan- dal that the county officers could not overlook it, Gambling on the Quiet. In support of this the gamblers declare that there is gambling in every com- munity along the shore, but it is being fun quietly. There were twenty-seven poker games running at one time in one hotel here last Sunday. they assert, and they were not small games either. Phil and John Daly and other old- timers argue that the present state of Long Branch is worse than the old, Public gambling, according to thelr argument has a tendency to make men gore careful. Busjness men and men fa positions of trust will not plunge in the public gambling-houses, whereas they fecl privileged to go to any leng! fn the privacy of secret gaines. To this wiew the people of Long Branch take exception. They admit that there are many games running, but say that if the visitors from New York will gamble Shere ts no way of stopping them. How Johnson Shocked The: It will be ono year to-morrow since Budge J, Franklin Fort, of the Su- preme Court, and Sheriff Obadiah B. Davis landed the knockout blow on the public gambling fhouses ot Long Branch. “Davey Johnson had filed plans for a club-house at the county ®eat that for cool audacity cannot be duplicated. On the public records of the county are spread the purposes for which the house was to be used, each foom being designated for a particu- Jar game, a private game, a sleeping ‘apartment, a restaurant, bar or what- ever the lang contemplated, Judge Fort was preeuy interested in gohngon's plans, In the May term of Court the gamblers came up for their Hquor licenses. Judge Fort issued them with the Understanding—to, whlch the amblers agreed—that no gam! Sohernalta was to be kept in any of t ubhouses. ‘The men who owned the clubhouses no attention to their agreement Rhey thought it would be the same in preceding years, when a nominal fine allowed the running of a gambling house ‘all season.
