Pkt al BESTS OEATH IS VERY SUSPICIOUS} $0 County Physician McKenzie Declares in His Report of Au- topsy on Body of Man Who Died in the Woods Home. THE PAIR NOT YET FOUND. Bon of the Dead Promoter Leaves Town to Aid Personally in the Search for the Doctor and His Wife. With the information that “Dr."" John . Woods und his wife, Alice Cloy Woods, who are wanted to explain the auspicious death of Col. William J. Best fn thelr San Rafael (Cal.) home, are Believed to be near Kingston, N. ¥., comes the report of the autopsy on Col. Best's body performed by County Phy- e@iclan William H. McKenzie, of New- ark. ‘The report follows: “First—I can say without any reserva- ton that the body had been previeusly wpened and almost all the digestive or- wans removed. This is not the custom ‘of undertakers or coroners in preparing bodies for burial. Hardly enough of the @limentary canal remains to show any ign of irritant polson—if death w fto poison. But by a careful analy: Yelieve that an expert chemist can dis- foover traces of poison !f the deceased foame to his death by poison. “Third—My examination of the drain ‘proves conclusively that the alleged yeause—cerebral hemorrhage—was ficti- tious, for the brain was absolutely in @ healthy condition at the time of Meath. “Fourth—My reason for suspecting ‘ghat the deceased did not die a natural death is the fact that the lower portion jof the intestines was highly inflamed. ‘Buch inflammation can only be caused ‘by powerful drugs or foreign particles. | “Fifth—This case Is exceedingly sus- jpicious, and I strongly advise that a (thorough chemico) analysis be made im- ‘wediately.”” This report has been sent to the Ban Mafael authorities and they may order @ chemical analysis to determine the ac- bual cause of death. Charles 8, Best, son of Col. Best, has gpone to Phillipsburg, N. J., the home of Mrs, Woods's parents, and from there fexpects to pick up the trail of the elus- five pair. When he left here it was with ythe expectation that from Phillipsburg would g to Buffaio and Niagara (Falls and possibly to Canada. He said ‘he would not come back until he had {Woods and his wife, for whom warrants ‘hanging larceny and forgery have been jissued. These warrants are now on the way to New York from California in the Mnands of Devoe. {| Considered of much significance is the tement of Mrs, Clara Woods, wife of r. Woods's brother Thomas, from whom Wwhe ts separated. She now lives at No. BM Ogden avenue, Jersey City Heights. Whe sald she believed John Lb, Woods P his wife were in Marbleton, a littie Mage near Kingston, N. ¥., because her brefher-in-law had a friend, Mrs. Wohn Terwilliger, who Itved there and ‘whom he had promised to visit. From @ postmarke on the letters Mrs, Alice Yoods bas written, Mrs. Clara Woods ferred that the couple was making for leton. “Charles 8, Best hada talk with Mrs. Wlara Woods before he left the city, and it is believed he has Marbleton as his Jective point. ‘TWO-TAILED COMET VISIBLE ¥O-NIGHT.
