THE WORLD: TUESDAY EVENING, JULY 14, 1903. MISS MURPHYSBT HAS ARRIVED 0. Twenty-five Pounds Weight, Strong and Healthy, and the Cunningest Little Hippo That Ever Went Down in the Tank. ‘ODD FISH ARE IN TOWN. There's the Grunt, the Trigger, the ‘Trunk and Others, Besides the Four-Foot Sea Serpent That Es-| caped Down the Bay. Miss Murphy, Graceful hippopotamus in Central Park, was safely delivered of a child to-day. Mother and child are doing well. Caliph, the father, is setting up the peanuts to the elephanta Miss Murphy s not inordinately proud, Dut her pensive smile !s more reminie- cent of the entrance to the Hoosac Tun- nel than ever, And well might she pat herself on the back if she could, for this Is her elghth offspring in fifteen ears. The new hippo baby weighed twenty- five pounds at birth, which Ja not such @ great welght for a hippopotamus, but @ hippo grows a lot. This one Is able to locate the family restautant with un- failing accuracy and when a few hours the prepossessing and THE MONKEY “DUDE” WHO DIED OF A BROKEN near, “MASHER” MASHED old skipped about unlike a gazelle. Official midwife Billy Snyder says that Miss Murphy's eighth is the cunningest hippopotamus he ever saw. As soon as it begins to take notice it will be taken out of the winter quarters with its mother and placed in the open tank. ‘Then will follow a pilgrimage of chil- @ren in fact and children of an older growth to Central Park, for im ail truth the antics of a baby hippopotamus are of a nature to inspire mirth, Compared to a baby hippopotamus, a Newfound- land pup is a skirt dancer. Miss Murphy will nourish her own offspring. She is an old-fashioned mother and does not Delieve in raising children on the bottle. And, besides, a bottle for her baby would have to be a carboy and the nipple would have to be as big as a Panama saat. ‘The only show of petulance Miss Murphy has shown for a long time was manifest at noon when she was in- formed that President Ragosevelt hail congratuia- not sent her a telegram oi tion. A name for the new arrival hae not been decided upon, because {t Is not @ certainty just what kind of an arri it is. it "proves to be the kind that ‘Billy Snyder has suspicions about, strong pressure will be brought to bear ll it Irwin. Here Are Some Queer Fish. ‘ing of hippopotamuses reminds . There are fresh fish jn the Aquarlum—fresh from Bermuda. Taey arrived yesterday on the steam- ship Trinidad. Among the fish are three ootopuses. The octopuses are not handsome. They feserve all that William J. Bryan ever Id about octopuses. Other fish in the collection are sur- geon-majors, grunts and hinds. There Are also trigger fish, but no revolver br gun fish to fit ‘them. The four- rs fish will inspire Deputy Police Commissioner Piper with polgnant re- gret if he ever sees them—regret that there are no four-eyed policemen. There are plenty of trunk fish that pack themselves, ljcewlse angle fish. The man who named the angel fish was a rare humorist, or perhaps It would ve better to call him a satirist. A four-foot green moray jumped out of its tank into the ocean just off Sandy Hook. ‘This sea serpent Information is open to Edward Corbett, Charles Mur- ray, Frederick Peel or any other Coney id press agent, SMALL-POX WA ACH MAN'S HOME Dread Disease Appeared in Household of Col. Archibald Rogers as Family Was About to Start for Newport. POUGHKEEPSIE, July 14.—Small-pox das broken out In Crommvald, the coun- Ty seat of Col. Archibald Rogers, of New York, whose house is now quarantined, and there !s much alarm in the village of Hyde Park that the dis- ease will spread, the villagers besieging the local physicians to be vaccinated. Young Mr. Coleman, a brother of Mrs. Rogers, was stricken with the disease two weeks ago and was promptly iso- lated in one of the small bulldings on the estate. Col. Rogers and his family, who had made arrangements to visit Newport, at once had their trunks returned from that place and submitted to a quarantine, which consisted In thelr keeping within the limits of Cromwald. Now there is another victim of the Gisease on the Rogers estate, who came down with smallpox yesterday, accord- ing to the statement of Dr. R. K, T hill, who ts attending Mrs. Roge brother. One of the monkeys In the big Zoo at Glen Island died yesterday of a broken heart. He was one of the trick monkeys of the Kudge family and was very proud of his ability to go through a perform- ance consisting of turning somersaults, walking a tight rope and promenading on his hind legs while carrying a cane in one of his paws. He was known as “Dude” and was probably one of the vainest little animals that ever saw the ipside of a cage. The Kudge family are endowed with whiskers and are very proud of them. Dude would sit for hours rubbing his face in Imitation of a man stroking his beard. A short time ago Dude had a slight misunderstanding with one of his companions and something of a mix-up ensued. It was of short duration, as the keepers interfered and Dude came out of it with several teeth marks on i face. He was removed to the infirmary for sick animals and a salve applied. ‘The wound did not heal as rapidly as was desired, so Dude's face was shaved. Tt was thought that this would assist the wound to heal. Fought for His Whiskers, He objected to the shaving process so strongly that chloroform had to be ad-! ministered. When he came out of it he seemed to understand ¢hat something had happened, and he determined to dis- cover what it was. He felt of his face reflectively.and with @ puzzled look, as! {f he could not comprehend the situa- tion. ‘Then his hand would gradually creep back until it reached a point that the razor had not covered. Then the monkey would look relieved, and he would again begin feeling of his cheeks as if hoping that his former digital in- vestigation had been false, In a few days the constant care be- stowed upon him began to tell and ti’ wound healed, but the whiskers did not grow aguin, Ten days ago it was de- cided to return him ¢o his compantons, and he seemed to understand that trou- ble was in store for him. At the door of his cage he hung desperately to his keeper's neck, hiding his naked face. When pushed inside he sat down close by the door and bravely held up his face for all his companions to see. His appearance provoked a sensation that was for a few moments very nearly a pantie. The Others Shunned Him. A ring-talled monkey, constructed on the general Unes of a daddy-long-legs, happened to be nearest when he was shoved into the cage, and went over the heads of the others as if she had been fired from a gun to a’remote cor- ner, where she shivered and jabbered her opinion of him. Her fright seemed to communicate itself to all the others, and they huddled together as far from him as they could get and shivered and chattered. ‘Then they gradually quieted down until an unnatural silence pre- valled. Their eyes, fixed on him, blazed with ‘curlosity and wonder, ' Three serious Kudge monkeys, still disentangled themselves fro) and cautiously approached him for closer observation in response to a chat- ter shaken out of him by misery. Slowly they drew near, unul he com- mitted the imprudence of takings short step to meet them, when ‘they backed away again, held a brief but evidently animated discussion amoly by stares, frowns and grimaces, without making a nd, and finally coming to a common Lung Trouble Before I took alck I eral years before. He was finally transferred to an- other cage, but the change did not seem to mend matters. He had been shunned by his companions. His pride had been wounded and his spirit crushed. <A week ago it was discovered that he ate but ttle and was fast becoming a skeleton.
