POPE WALKS ABOUT HS ROOM AND READS HORACE Confers with Private Secretary, Who, Surprised at His Vitality, Says that Were His Grave Illness Not Known His Actions Would Seem Normal. e ROME, July 1¢.— The Pope rose at 6 o'clock this morning. He sald he thought the alr of his recom was somewhat vitlated and wanted it changed. (His attendant, Pio Centra, after having been authorized to do so by Dr. Lapponi, opened the windows of the whole apartment, including that of the) sick-room, the Pontiff having previously been carefully covered with extra blankets. Afte~ remaining open for a short time the windows were closed, with the exception of the window of the sick-room, Dr. Lapponi having de- eided that the balmy, fresh air could only do the patient good. The open- ing and the shutting of the windows was watched from the piazza by the people who had gathereca there to hear the latest news. Some of them in- terpreted it as meaning that the Pontiff was dead, which necessitated a prompt official dental. The Pope praye¢ for nal an hour and then had breakfast, partaking of the yolk of an egg, beate:. up with sugar, in hot coffee, and a light biscuit. ‘The Pontiff then attended to hie toilet, but he did not shave. He received his private secretary, Mgr. Angeli, who was again surprised at the Pope's brightness of mind and display of energy. On leaving the sick-room Mgr. Angeli remarked to those who surrounded him and asked for news that, ff 1¢ wan not known that the Pope was dangerously ill, from his appearance at that time one would any he was in his normal condition. The Monsignor added that the Pontiff referred to several matters, re- calling exactly tho most minute details and remembering facts, fisures and “dates with marvellous promptness, and all this to the accompaniment of enuff-taking. The same impressions were formed by Count Camillo Pecct, who visited the Poe after Mgr. Angell. The doctors’ visit and the operation followed. Dr. Mazzoni’s operation this morning was almost identical with that of Tuesday afternoon. The patient lay on his couch, with his side exposed. The skin above the affected parts was washed with a solution of alcohol; cocaine was hypodermically injected, and Dr. Mezzoni inserted a Pravas ‘needle, which, by suction, drew off the vitiated matter. The operation ‘vas comparatively painless, and was performed without recourse to “ahloroform or other anaesthetics. After the operaton the Pope felt so relfeved that he insisted on getting and took several steps toward his armchair and seated himself for a ‘ew minutes. He then rose and, going to the book shelves, where he keeps nis favorite authors, took down Horace's “Ars Boetica,” returned to the armchair and began reading, holding one leg over the other. He seemed On the contrary, he appeared to have derived benefit from it. Later in the day the Pope had lunch and then took a long rest. ——_ ‘HOW TO HANDLE HORSES DURING THE HOT DAYS One of the hats of last season is augmented with mosquito netting to protect the ears and a wet sponge is attached in front—Another het has a wire arrangement to carry a piece of ice.
