Miss McKee, who had assumed that mame after two marriages proved fall- ures, died in her splendid home at No. {18 West Forty-seventh street, from a gancer of the abdomen with which she thad been afflicted about three years. .Bhe believed she was cured two years Sago, but the old trouble returned and jm year ago the doctors told her she joould not live two months. After being graduated from the Routh Normal School of Indiana at ixteen she taught school one year, ‘hen she went to Chicago as a book- keeper. Alexander A, McKee, then assistant manager of the Western Union office fn Chicago, in which she was employed, ook her to the Washington Park race track ono day and he advised her to bet $2 on qn 8 to 1 shot. She won and Mh $6 nearly drove her wild with ex- pitement, She and MceKe eloped, and from that ime ehe was at tho track every day. he admitted that she knew absolutely fmothing about race torses, form or rac- \fng, and that she played horses whose frames or appearance struck her. After that was closed | three years ago she quit the pool-room business and went on the stage, star- ring in several productions, the last and most prominent being ‘‘Lost, Strayed or Stolen.” In her private life {t was sald by her Intimate friends that she was without a serious fault. She was a member of the Methedist Church, a regular attend- ant at services and enerous contribu- tor, She was systematically philan- |thropic, being a contributor to a num- ber of funds, and was always ready to relieve the distress of the individual in- digent who came to her notice, she suffered much through the public mis- apprehension about her private lite, It {3 sald that Gussie McKee has left an estate which will be valued between $100,000 and $150,000. She owned the home In which she dled. besides having large accounts in several banks. It 1s under- ASLEEP, HE FELL IN RIVER AND DROWNED Unidentified Man Lost His Life Despite the Efforts of Others on the Pier. An unidentified man, asleep on the dock at the foot of Barrow street, North River, fell into the water drowned early to-day. Qn paper in his pocket was the name Jo- seph Ward, No. 854 West Forty-ninth street, but the police believe it to be the name of a friend. The man was sleeping near the edge of the plier. Other sleepera there were awakened by his cries as he struck the water, and Willlam Gedden and John Murphy jumped in after him. Their search was in vain. Two hours later the body was found and brought ashore. The man was six feet in height, weighed about 190 pounds and was ap- parently about forty years old. Crowds of passengers and fellow em- ployees saw Kearney roasting on the| rail but were powerless to help him. The man slipped as he was coupling cars near the Willlamsburg ferry and fell. His hand caught part of the tron work of the car and he hung suspended swinging like a pendulum, As he swung his foot hit the electric rail. A great burst of greenish-yellow flame envei- oped him and his agonized screams were heard for blocks. The force af his swing was #0 great that it broke his contact with the rail, only to allow him to} swing back again with greater force. This kept up until the repeated shocks | made the man unconscious and his hold relaxed. His body fell two inches from the rail.
