_agents, hy -—NGEGOERS BRAVED LIMIT DF TRAVELLING HARDSHIPS Flood and, Washout Made Day a Memo- rable One for Those Who Tried to Reach the Sheepshead Bay Track. * Racegoers are not often deprived of thetr favorite eport when they make up their minds to go to the track. When they ran up against cloudburats and mrashouts, owever, they were fairly stumped. There were among those in the stalled trains of the Long Island end Brighton Beaoh railroads yesterday facegoers who had braved biizzards at Guttenburg, who had helped shovel the snow from’ the tracks at Iron Hill and braved various other climatic hardships, ‘but they always reached the objective point. Yesterday, however, those in the Long Islagd trains were stalled in a benighted region, where there was neither trolley pot wagon. Fabulous sume were offered by bookmakers for conveyances, but there were pone. All hands were trun- dled back to Long Island City, were compelled to go en to New York, there to be met by the intelligence thet trains and trolleys on the surface roads were stalled. Thousands gave up. the trip and stayed tn’ town. On the Brighton road those stalled had their choice of a bath in icy cold water and mud or remaining quietly In the cars. They chose the latter, reach- ing the course long after the second race. At the track the bugler was missing, the timer was late, the stewards were in New York: somewhere and the judges were no one knew where. They finally by tel phone to have the races postponed, but the assoctation refused. June 29 will Jong linger in the memory of racegoers as one of the most remarkable ever ex- perlenced. No nee for Heaper Clu. An association known as the Hesper Club seems to be making considerable noise just at present. It is evidently well blessed with indefatigable press ‘The Hespers, according to the Press agents, are an association of fleld bookmakers who claim that they have organized to prevent welching and pro- tect the public. They intend to petition the Jockey Club for privileges such as are enjoyed by the Metropolitan Jockey Club. They might just as well save labor, ven and ink. The Jockey Club will not recognize the Heepers or any other association. ‘The flelg 1s free for all In the matter of laying odds. and there will be no special Brivileges for the ingenious gentlemen ‘who are booming the Hespera. If there tuave been’ weiching cases they have not been noticeable. If the fleld public ts erying for protection, the plea hea not ®eached the association. It Is better to leave weil enough alone. In the big ring matters are very dif- ferent, Large sums of money are wagered. An organization is necessary in the big ring for mutual protection, most of the betting being done on credit. ‘The field dove not need anything of this sort, and the Jockey Clul will ignore any request for recognition. Belmont’s Curious Experience, August Belmont had a curious exper!- ence at Bennings not long ago. Land adjoining the race course was necessary for Improvements, and Mr, Belmont purchased it. Then he took some skilled workmen on from New York to begin the improvements. Mr. Belmont and the workmen when they reached the course were considerably surprised to find quite @ crowd of people awaiting them. Clase inepection revealed the fact thet the crowd was made up of farmers, and they’ were armed with pitchforks. They formed in line and presented the sharp eteel prongs toward the Jockey Club chairman and the as- tonished workmen. “Wibat does all this mean’ asked Mr. Belmont angrily, “Tt means,’ said one of the farmere quietly, “that we hold a lease on this property, and that we do not Intend to vacate umtil the lease expires unless we are recompensed for our labor and crops." ‘And how much ‘recompense’ do you comme rs seuenie ited LOT TATED NET IER TMT THE WOKLD: TUESDAY AMATEUR BASEBALL.
