Liars THE WORLD: MONDAY EVENING, JUNE 29, 1903. WEEK OF SURPRISES FOR SHEEPSHEAD 'S- RAGEGOERS Talent Was Badly Fooled Badly Fooled by African- der’s Defeat of Irish Lad and Victory of Thomas's Pulsus in the Great . Trial. “qe present week at Sheepshead is Got Mkely to manufacture as much turf {history as did the racing of the” week §ust past. The defeat of Broomstick and Magistrate, the idols of the two- Bear-old division, and of Irish Lad, the mwinner of the Brooklyn Handicap, were @tunning surprises on Saturday. ‘That the general public and that divis- fon of regulars known as the talent did mot believe that Africander was the equal of Irish Lad was shown in the betting. They took elther Irish Lad or Major Daingerfield. Africander they let gun for the books, with the result that ats price went up trom 2 to 1 to 8 to 1. ‘This was evidence that no smart money was bet on Africander. But Africander surprised every one. His bad race in the Standard Stakes and his superb performance in the Su- urban, the one on a fast track and the @ther in mud, forced one to the con-|, @dusion that Africander was at his best 4m mud, and that he had bad feet, which would not permit him to stand a gruelling race on a hard, fast track. Superb Performance. ‘His performance was superb. He ran @u true as ever « thoroughbred ran in his life and finished out with the cour- age of a bulldog. He was largely aided in this performance by the fact that he Wecelved @ perfect ride from George Odom. come that ‘lead. But he wasn't. His spirit was gone fighting and tugging for his head, and he hung in behind Afri- cander and made up very little ground. ‘That Irish Lad has epeed he proved in the Brooklyn. That he had courage was unquestioned after that quarter-mile drive with Gunfire. Was it not the proper thing to let Irtwh Lad go on with Africander, outspeed him if he could, and rely on his courage to stall off the Dwyer colt in the final drive? Odom'n Successful Ride, ‘Thia was the policy pursued by Odom on Africander, and {t was successful. However, the time of the rate shows that Africander put up a superb per. formance, ‘and must be admitted the best until the colts meet again. A’ spe- clal race between these two involving @ head and head race from start to finjsh will pe the only way of proving superiority. © Broomatick’s defeat in the Great Trial was not a disgrace. He had never raced six furlongs, and 129 pounds was @ stiff Impost to put on a colt of his size. But he ran good and game, showed the way to the stretch, and wa: only beaten by a narrow margin, fight- Ing with superb energy to the 1 jump. Alliance Race Expected. The forward running of Alllance was not @ surprisd to those who carefully watched O'Neill's ‘handling of this colt in a maiden race a few days ago. Alli- ance had the rail position. O'Neill got Into more pockets than there are on a pool table, and ended by finishing third as far on the outside as it was pos- sible for him to get. That Alliance could tow-rope the two-year-olds he met in the maiden race there is no question, Whether his defeat in the maiden race was due to carelessness or hard luck is & problem ‘the writer does not care to answer in the absence of positive knowledge. Zt ts charitable, perhaps, to call it herd luck. Tho present week does not call for much In the way of enthusiasm, Decause the stakes are ordinary affairs and will attract but little attention, with one ex- ception, That {s the Suburban Renewal, which has fourteen entries. Africander, the winner of the Suburban, is not in- cluded. The fleld ts a fine one, including Major Daingerfield, Herbert, Waterboy, Heno, Goldsmith, Irish Lad, Hunter Raine, City Bank, Bonnébert and Blues. ‘The same weights carried in the Subur- ban will be carried here, and if the track 18 dry and fast a superb contest should be seen. Africander is not likely to go, for the reason that he has an ex- tremely valuable engagement in the Lawrence Realization, which this year 1s worth within @ few dollars of §25,000. A hard race in the Suburban Renewal might throw him completely off. The Realization looks’a soft place for Africander, particularly as Irish Lad ts not an eligible. It is reported that John A, Drake will send on Savable to Without detracting at all from the significant performance of Africander % may be said that “orders” were largely responsible for the defeat of Ittsh Lad. Burns was without doubt Given waiting orders, and when Burne Peceives orders of this’ sort he gener- @tly carries them out ‘without exercls- ing sey Mscretion. If it*had'been neces- je would probably have broken rien Lad's Jaw in the first half mile @o that no! fault could have been found gith him for not riding to “orders.” ‘As it was, Burns was in behind Major Daingerfleld and Africander, sawing the Nal head off in the effort to restrain Orders Aro Ridiout ‘What a ridiculous thing 1s “orders.” Pow presumptuous thé owner or trainer ‘who thinks he can foresee or foretell Juet how a race cap be run. The pwner ‘ec trainer who can give ‘orders’ that will guard against any mistakes that may happen in @ race is @ far-seeing Apdividual indeed. Irish Lad, who made the running In Phe Brooklyn Handicap from end to end, ‘and’ put up the most superb race of his life, showed that he was a front runne But notwithstanding this evident proot ef his disposition “orders"’ must neces- sarily be given which result in tho fockey fighting the colt for half.e mile or more, Burns actually went from (wraps to a hard drive in two jumps on the backstretch Saturiay. At that time there was a good, game, courageous and fleet-tooteg colt two lengths in front fim. That two lengths had to be over- come. It meant that Irish Lad had to|meet Africander, but not much credence be much superior to Africander to over-|is given the story ja a ra WO a RACING NOTES.
