Wew Act Wins Applause in Led- erer’s Midsummer Night Fan- Opening Performance. BUT, OH! THAT BOYS’ BAND. Burlesque Styled “The Darling of the Gallery Gods” Makes Fair Success, and “The Dress Parade” Garicatures Broadway Players. Once in a while on old {dea—like @ “long shot" at the races—wins out This proved the case last night at the opening of the Cry ital Ge of the New York and Criterion th There were some things, particular!, the noise of a boys’ band, in Geo: WW. Lederer’s Midsummer Night Fancles which could hardly be fanoled on elther @ midsummer hight—which wasn't last night—or a long winter evening. But there was no question that Ned Way- bufn’s Minstrel Maids caught the fancy of a large audience made up mostly of theatrical folk. The girls, sixteen in number and a trifle over that in age, were given a ‘whirtwind welcome for their clever copy of an old-time minstrel show, They first appeared in parade, wearing Hi Henry hats and Newmarkets of vivid plglds, which they presently shed and then made ready for the traditional “Qrat part” by blacking thelr faces and donning black wigs in full view of the interested spectators. This over, they cake-walked forward, In fetching cos- tomes, and seated themselves in a semi-circle. “Hear Dean Bells.” “Hear Dem Bells” struck a popular ghord in the memory, and this was fol- lowed by other songs reminiscent of bygone days. “Bay,” broke in the end-lady on the “pones’ side “how does Anna Held feel?” “I don't know; how does Anna Held eel?" repeated the once fair but now barnt-corked interlocuto: “Like Zlegfeldt,” answered “Bones,” mherest the audience threw conniption fits of laughter, girls didn't sing any too well, but they. dancea as !f born with clogs on thelr fect and kept the skit golng with true minstrel swing. ‘When, in response to persistent calls ef “Wayburn!” the gentleman who de- ‘vised the act appeared on the stage, he was mobbed by the maids, who also took a delight, which he evidently didn’t ghare, in streaking his face with black from thelr own. An amusing travesty on the Belasco play, dubbed “The Darling of the Gal- Jory Gods.” was well received. A Canfield Flavor. George V. Hobart, who Is to blame for the burlesque, has given it a strong Canfield flavor and worked In a number of happy hits: Trixie Friganza did vio- ‘ence to Blanche Bates as Whoa San, and Junie McCree was almost as truly American as Miss Ba stage lover in the part of Karl, leader of the “short- card” band. In another “bundle of nonsense” called “The Dress Parade’ rather indifferent attempts were made to give caricatures of various characters in the season's Broadway productions.
