The fifteen-year-old aspirant to @ancing honors owes his life to the fulck wit, bravery and muscle of Po- Weeman Dennis J. Riley, of the Old Blip station, who threw himself over the side of the centre pier, trusting to the strength of Deckhand Meyer Jer- me to grab his ankles, while the of- fiver felt around in the muddy water, trying to find the downing boy. Peter Monaco s! supposed to be aboard the Fulton at 7 o'clock. The ferry-boat had just tied up in her silp as Peter eame mincing along a slippery stringer In all the glory and grace of the goo! Step as sanctioned in Spring street so- Glal circies. Sween the centre pier and the brid| ja’ filthy water. Peter yelled and swal- lowed much filth. Then he went under, Riley Heard His Yel Policeman Riley heard the cry and Yan from the gate to the end of the bridge. At the same tims Deckhand Meyer Jerome jumped from the boat ‘Without g word Riley threw himself Over the side of the pier and Meyer grabbed him by the ankles. Riloy’s fingers clutched the hair of Petr Monaco and drew his henu above Water. Slowly the policeman hauled the half-drowned boy out of the water and Pushed him up toward the stringer, where lay Jerome. A couple of by- standers lifted the lad to the pler and hauled Riey after him. Then young Peter was given a sample of bead spinning waich made him diz Riley stuck his fingers down tlie boy’ throat, and spun him on his caput, in @ manner which would have dono credit to Tom Jenkins, A portion of the Hast River re-ap- Peared just as the ambulance drove up. ‘The boy was hustled to the Old Slip @tation, where Dr. Rice made a unwa ef Peter Monaco and a stomach pump. ‘Phen the lad was rushed to the Hudson Btreet Hospital and put to bed. YALE CREWS TRY STARTING Big Race Will Be Rowed Down Stream and Earlier in the Day than Ever Before in Its History. (Special to The Evening Wor:4.) YALE QUARTERS, GALES FHRRY, Conn., June 20.—The crews had an easy morning of It yesterday, doing but little work. They were out on the river but a short time, most of the praetice being devoted to pistol] starts. Last evening the freshmen were taken down river anq met the Harvard crews on the way to the start for a two-mile trial row for the Crimson freshmen. The launch fol- lowed them down for 2 mille, and, re- turning to the freshmen, who were wait- ink off Red Top, Conch Kennedy sent them over the first half mile to see what they could do it in. ‘The unofMctal time tor the half mile was two minutes and thirty-six seconds, Yesterday afternoon Capt. Waterman ang Coach Kunaig, accompanied by Jullus Curtiss, chairman of the Regatta Committee, went to Red Top and held a conference with Capt, McGrew and Coach Higginson, of the Harvard crew. For some time efforts have been directed to have the ‘varsity race rowed up stream at 5.9 P. M,, but at the meeting yesterday afternoon it was def- nitely decided to row the race down stroam at 12.80 P, M. if it is possible. If the referee decides that the condi- tons are unfavorable at the noon hour the race will be postponed until 5.30 P. | M. and will then be rowed up stream. ‘At noon the wind invariably blows up river, so that with an ebb tide the water 1s likely to be pretty rough. Even if the river is not rough the head wind makes the conditions rather poor, while late in the afternoon the crews, if they rowed up stream, would almost certainly get a fair wind and tide. Up stream races, however, are generally very. unsatisfac- tory, especially from the spectators’ standpoint, and the decision at the con- ference yesterday seems to meet with general approval, Con Daly went to New London again yesterday and placed himeelf under Dr, Cronan's care. He is not at all well Stuyvesant Fish, jr, has taken Daly's place in the four-oar, ——— MURRAY HILLS MEET PHILA. GIANTS TO-MORROW. Game Will He Pinyed on Olympia Field, on Lenox Avenue.
